Do it yourself or through a travel companyWe're thinking of an 7/8 day tour in Dec 2014, I know a long way off but we like to plan well in advance, and wonder whether to plan our own itinerary and book all car and drivers and accommodation or go through a company such as Kuoni or similar.
Any experiences or thoughts appreciated.

2If you are confident enough travel alone for the best experience. but if you wish for a few guidance and comfort, go for a travel agency. but my advice is if you wish to get a travel agency don't just get fooled. do a google search about the guide you gonna get. because your whole tour will depend on the guide you get.google and see the reviews of the guide.

4We got back from Sri Lanka last week and had a wonderful (but hectic) 13 days travelling independently. We used public transport between cities and tuk tuks for around cultural sites such as Anuradhapura. It is perfectly possible to do it independently although many on this site will say that you definitely need a driver and car. Also, beware of touts on here - often recognised by their recommendations and lack of posts.
You've got plenty of time to plan - do research on the internet (Trip Advisor also) and have a great time.

6Back from three week Sri Lanka trip in May. Had brilliant time there. We selected something between DIY trip and Travel Agent: Free travel information with transport booking service. They are experienced travellers and Lanka local qualified travel drivers help you to plan a journey just for you. We booked the first class train tickets from Colombo to Kandy and Ella; from Galla to Colombo through them. We also hired a car from Ella to Yala. You may contact with them just to plan your journey even you do not use their car service.
You could find them from facebook: Book Sri Lanka train tickets and Car Hire Service.

9Agree with Scottyheather. A DIY is easy in SL. I traveled in public transport, took a tuk tuks where required. Time spent researching helps.
For accommodation, I phoned in advance for those in LP.
Alternatively you get much better deals if you take a tuk tuk to a place noted in LP, there would be a cluster of other accommodation.. You pay a premium, simply for any accommodation noted in LP.
I had very good deals , AC, attached toilet, doubles, never exceeding USD 25/- in good locations, in those not noted in LP. I believe the supply exceeds the demand.
Be careful with food and water. I boiled my own in the room.
Most transport is v slow, with traffic both night and day, rarely exceeding 30kmh.
Check out all our reviewed and recommended accommodation and book online.
