Agra to Varanasi by TrainDear all,
I am aware of that the train from Agra to Varanasi is very popular trip therefore, if you don't book a train in advance, I heard you wouldn't get a seat.
I am travelling either late September or early October, and the dates are not confirmed yet as I am travelling with flexible dates.
So my main question is that would it be too late if I book a seat to Varanasi from Agra, maybe 6 or 7 days before my trip as all my trip in India and Nepal are not fixed dates (I am travelling without any specific itinerary, and will go wherever I want to go once I get to one city to another).

2Will you be in Delhi before heading to Agra and Varanasi? If yes, you could try the foriegn tourist quota office on the first floor (one floor above ground level) of the New Delhi Railway Station. They have never failed me.
Also, you can check availability for Tundla Junction (near Agra) and Mughal Sarai (near Varanasi).

4We had to get a train from Varanasi to Agra and when we went to the train station the train was booked up for a couple of days but we got a train on the third day. I'm sure that if you go to a train station a week beforehand you'll have no problem getting the dates that you want, especially if you are flexible with the class that you want.

5Thanks for all your comments!
siamiam, yes I will be in Delhi before I travel to Agra. I will stay in Delhi for 2 days and I will go to Jaipur for another few days and head to Agra then to Varanasi.
johnney, thanks! hope I will ok too!!
graby, yes I am flexible with the class. As per your comments, I hope I can get a seat!
Would it be ok to book a train when I get to Delhi or would it be too late? I think I will be in Delhi about 5-6 days before I head to Varanasi from Agra.
Another question is that, my planned trip in India is as following: Delhi -> Jaipur -> Agra -> Varanasi -> Pohkara (Nepal)
Do you guys think 10 days to 13 days are enough for this trip? These trips are all by trains and buses.

6Looks fine untill you see Pokhara on the end. Varanasi-Pokhara is a long run and there are no trains in Nepal. You'd have to take a train to Gorakhpur-jeep/bus to Saunali border-bus to Butwal and then bus to Pokhara. Personally, I'd stop overnight in Butwal (better choice of hotels than Saunali/Bhaiwara), and you really want to do the Siddarth highway (Butwal-Pokhara) in daylight, the scenery is magnificent !

7Thank you, UB for your comments!
Yes, I meant I will train to Gorakphur, and take jeep/bus to Saunali and take bus to border and take bus to Pokhara.
As per your comment, I will certainly try to take bus to Pokhara from Butwal during the day time!
Btw, what's the best option to book a jeep/bus to Saunali from Gorakphur? Same for bus to Butwal.
Did you use any specific tour company for this? or would it be ok to book a seat once I get to the each cities?

8I have gone from Agra to Varanasi by train.
I suggest going to a local travel agent and try to obtain seats in the Tatkal quota.
You can also join the queue at the Agra Railway Station. You will have to fill out a form in English.
The reality that I found was that booking at a late stage, you end up on the unpopular trains. My train left Agra at 4 am. My train from Varanasi was slower than my preferred train.

10@7, shared jeep taxis will be waiting around the station in Gorakphur when you arrive, it's about 3 hrs, in Nepal you're using local buses, Saunali-Butwal, isn't far and the buses stop close to the border. For Butwal -Pokhara you don't reserve, just turn up at the bus stand in the morning, your hotel should know the timings.

13I agree with the above poster. When we were on the Varanasi to Agra train one of the people in our compartments bag was stolen with her passport money everything in it. The scary part was that she was sleeping with it right next to her face so be careful.

14“ bag was stolen with her passport money everything in it “ << that is how not to do it.
So, nothing in the bag and all on the body.
Agra to Varanasi must be a big hit targeting tourists.
