O where, O where shall we go??Hello,
My husband and I are trying to figure out the best place to go for about 2.5 months this winter (most likely Jan.-late March) with our 3 year old son. Thailand is my husbands top pick but we were thinking to maybe stick to this side of the Atlantic...we are in Maine. If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated! Here are the main characteristics we are looking for in our perfect winter getaway:
-BEACH...we basically want to kick it on the beach for a few months, so this is the #1 requirement.
-Perhaps near or in a small town, not too touristy, but don't mind a bit. Locals are welcoming, and a sense of community is always a positive.
-My husband is thinking of getting his scuba certification, so that would be a plus.
-Centrally localized...just in that it would be great to have a few accessible day trips, where we don't need to take a 15 hour overnight bus.
-Pretty cheap....we ideally want to rent a bungalow, apt. or whatever on the beach...we were thinking of having a budget of around $5000 total for rent, food, entertainment, excursions, etc. for 3 months..
We are open to any ideas....we were thinking Honduras, Costa Rica, Columbia, & Mexico...but again, pretty open! Thanks in advance for your time and suggestions!

1I would suggest Honduras as your partner wants to get a scuba certificate. Maybe fly to Cancun ( and then leave straight away) travel down the coast into Belize and on to Honduras?
You will have plenty time when you got 2 1/2 month. Maybe add Guatemala, I don't think Costa Rica is good for diving, but lots of other things to see and do. Panama should also have some fantastic beaches.
Good luck with your choice, so many destinations and so little time ;-)

5I'm going to be the voice of dissent and recommend Thailand -- mainly because you have such a lot of time. If you live in Maine, all of the Central American countries are easy to visit when all you have is a week or two. To go to southeast Asia from the U.S., because of the jet lag, it's ideal to leave 3-4 weeks minimum (in my opinion), especially with children. Unless you are living a charmed life where you are constantly getting opportunities to travel for 2-3 months, I'd pick the further destination for this one and leave the others for shorter trips....especially if Thailand is your husband's top pick. in that amount of time, you don't even have to limit yourself to Thailand. You could spend a month on a Thai island focusing on diving, and then move on to see other places or counties nearby. Koh Tao in Thailand is supposed to be a diver's paradise. Jan. to March is one of the best times of the year to go to that part of the world. There are some good places to dive near Bali as well, which is another very kid friendly destination in the area. Koh Lanta in Thailand isn't known for diving but has all of the features you list below. I spent nearly a month there with our two kids and was never bored.
