2The bus departs from Lilongwe at 7pm sharp, border crossing is easy. I've taken more than 1 'night bus' in Africa and haven't had a horrible experience anywhere. Anything can happen anywhere with any vehicle.
Have a read through my 3 posts here for more details on how the journey goes on the Taqwa coach.

3True, anything can happen anywhere, but potholed roads with no pavements, so people walking all over them, other vehicles without lights or with dazzling full beam, animals wandering around with no road sense (or lights) and generally appalling driving all make travelling at night far more dangerous than travelling by day.
I would never travel by bus at night in Africa unless there was absolutely no alternative.
