3 months in AfricaHi fellow travelers
I'm going to Africa in September, primarily Ethiopia but I also want to include Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Mozambique so I would need a lot of advice and tips on every single matter!!!
The main purpose of my trip is to go to Ethiopia and find an NGO to work with. I have a BA in Political Science and Holocaust and genocide studies and I've been wanting to go to Africa or the Middle east being the last one not the best option right now.
I would love to do safaris, go trekking, visit Kilimanjaro etc but honestly I don't have the money and I've heard its very expensive, I'm lucky I know some folks there and I will stay with them. This is not exactly a vacation trip but of course being there I don't want to miss some adventure.
1) Can I do some of the most common activities on my own? do I need to book with travel agencies?
2) How many days would I need if I wanted to do Kilimanjaro?
3) Besides Nairobi, any other cheap city to flight in/out of?
4) Based on what I've read, transportation can be difficult in Africa. Any tips on this?
5) Tent and sleeping bag. Tips anyone?
Thanks for your time!!

1Hi am sure youll get other specific answers but have you got yourself a Lonely Planet guidebook on Africa or maybe your local library has one to have a read around in.
Some of your questions the answers differ from area to area, country to country in Africa.
Ethiopian airlines were good for us when we flew to Burundi from London via Rwanda with a night in Ethiopia on the way back (am yet to back to Ethiopia to see it as extensively as Id like). Ethiopian airlines also do a package of internal flights for a good price - as far as I know they are only available when you walk into one of their offices (that might have changed of course - but otherwise do quite low priced internal flights that can be booked individually online - in addition to the more budget option of cheap bus transport)
Also theres a lot of travellers who write actual tips and recommendations in www.virtualtourist.com with photos etc as well - quite a number of regular or frequent travellers to and around Africa there in that site.
