Mexican Cruise during ChristmasHi all,
My brother and his wife and 3 teenaged daughters and my wife, our 10 YO daughter and my brother and my 70 something YO mother are all going on a Mexican Cruise for 7 days during Christmas this year, courtesy of Mom (Thanks Mom!). The stops are Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. We are very familiar with Cabo since we have had a Condo there for over 20 years. My question is about the other 2 destinations. I haven't done any cruises, but I know they let us off at the ports for the day, usually for 5-8 hours. What would be a good excursion for our families to consider while we are in Mazatlan and PV? We would like to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. We've considered renting a passenger van and travel ( no more than an hour or so) to some place nice/interesting/fun? Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

2A great trip out of Mazatlan is to the historic mining town of Copala. Daniels' Restaurant is a real treat and a beautiful old church. It's about an hour into the mountains, so a cruise ship schedule might be a problem unless they offer a sponsored tour. Taxi not an option with a large group, but a rental van would work. Call ahead and make sure the restaurant is open.

3Renting a car and driver that speaks your language works well with a cruise. The driver will know the area and take where ever you want to go. Make sure you negotiate for a daily price and agree on number of hours and always...always pay at the END of the tour to make sure the transportation is still there waiting after you come back from eating/shopping.

4I did that exact route on a cruise and when we got off the ship, we just talked to a couple of taxi drivers, found one we liked and then asked him how much for his own personal city tour. We had a lot of fun, too, and it was much cheaper than taking the official excursions. I know there's supposed to be good whale-watching around PV that time of year, in case that interests you. Enjoy.
