15Beware of train times and so on in newspapers. Many are incorrect.
The train line itself is not new, they just added a short spur to the airport, see my previous thread on the train line. http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=2178328
They should have double tracked the medan - airport section, and rerouted all trains running through lubuk pakam via the airport, thereby connecting the airport directly to Siantar, Rantau Prapat and Tanjung Balai. They have not done this, but if you did want to catch a train from the airport, it's only a few km to drive to the nearest station from the airport to catch a train to Siantar or whatever.
They also missed the opportunity to run trains onwards to binjai, although a couple connect I believe.
Thus they could have run trains to binjai for bukit lawang and Siantar for danau Toba, missing out some nasty dusty congested roads in the process. But nope.
Anyway, the buses to binjai, assuming they are frequent and don't stop too much (though from the 30,000rp fare I'd guess they a re relatively premium) are a definite improvement on the sham of overpriced airport taxis, and then having to make it out to an undefined roadside on the outskirts of medan to catch a bus to bukit lawang.

16Note that the new airport adds 30km to a trip to bukit lawang or berastagi from the airport, but cuts 15km off the journey to lake Toba.
I assume transport operators are taking the opportunity to further hike prices. Previously bukit lawang to airport was running at around 500,000rp, which is quite steep already, and further price increases aren't really justifiable compared to other transport costs around Sumatra.

17At Polonia I just used to walk out of the airport, and down towards the arch a bit, and get a becap for 15000 rupiah to Mesjid Raya. It was a 10 minute ride.
Airport trains are typically fast but expensive. This one appears to be not fast. From the Stasiun kereta near Lapangun Merdeka to Mesjid Raya is at least as far as Polonia.
My conclusion is the new airport doesn't encourage Medan-based tourism.
