Youth Hostel Dining and Associated NosebagsAt the risk of being cleaved asunder by a greater power for telling pork pies, let's be honest here, there's not a lot going for them really is there.
Stolen food, disgusting fridges, even more feral dreadlocked Cro-Magnon knuckle-dragging clones eating with their digits leaving cornflake residue that morphs into world's best glue on the very bowl you want to use. Nice.
Sorry, I just experienced a post-traumatic hostel flashback from contributing to a thread on the Strayan/ Noo Zillan twig of the tree. I just had to get it out of my system. Carry on...

2I wouldn't know. I stayed in 2 hostels many, many yrs. ago. The Innsbruck hostel was apparently run by neo-Nazis and peopled by an insular, unfriendly group of travelers. (I left the following morning.)
The other was the polar opposite in Olympia, Greece, where the balcony ran between the men's and women's wings and life was loose and easy.
I've thought of it all often, comparing countries, cultures and my attitudes. Most recent hostel was in Halifax, NS 2 yrs ago when I introduced my nephew to a hostel stay. it was funky fun and I went to sleep listening to the youngsters singing and drinking and doing all the good things associated to a good youth hostel evening.

6It's best if the place is half empty-the hostel I stayed @ on Vava'u was like that and overall no too bad.
The place in Ucluelet I couldn't believe the shit people ate-of course we brought our own Halibut, Salmon & Crab so our meals were outstanding as per SOP but otherwise it was ghetto-I did the dishes one night just to clear the mess up and because the smell from our boiling Crab was driving the Staff crazy poor poverty stricken bastards.
