Mozambique Tips and late arrival in NampulaHello, Hello
With my husband we are planning to stay more than a week in the northern part of Mozambique.
We want to do Nampula, Nacala, Ilha de mocambique, Pemba. Any advise on where to stay, where to eat and what to do?
Also we are arriving in Nampula around 8pm, is it ok to arrive late at Nampula?
Thanks for your help

1There's no reason to be worried about arriving late, just make sure your hotel has a taxi waiting for you. Nampula is small and sometimes there can be no taxis at the airport.
For accommodation check out this site, it has a good map:
There isn't much to do in Nampula, you should go straight to Nacala. Nuarro Lodge is a great spot there. Then you can easily spend three days just wandering the streets of Ilha.

3Hmm, fair enough. I didn't realise you were getting up to Pemba too. Sounds like a great plan.
Not sure if you will get much out of Nacala, unless you go to somewhere like Nuarro. Nacala is a big port town. Even Pemba is not a huge highlight unless you can get to somewhere to do some diving. Or the fabulous Ibo Island. Tight schedule, it might not be feasible. And Ibo is a little like Ilha in that there aren't great beaches, but incredible history.

5Yes, there are buses or chapas from everywhere to everywhere in Mozambique. It might not be comfortable, but you'll get there.

6Ozzie, thank you very much for your precious help.
To be honest, we are going to mozambique also to learn more about the way of living and the culture and not only for the beaches. Do you think it's possible to do that in Ilha and Pemba?
I checked Nuarro lodge prices yesterday and it's out of budget so maybe after Ilha, we'll go straight to Pemba and spend maybe one or two days in Ibo.
Is Ibo really worth it? How much does it cost to go there from Pemba and how long?
You are right, our time schedule (but also budget) is really tight and we want to make the best of our trip ;-)

7Definitely, probably more so in Ilha, it's a fascinating spot...a town with no water source other than the run off from the fort roof.
Getting from Pemba to Ibo is a bit of a mission. You can fly (about $300 return), or land/boat way can take a whole day. It's tide dependent. Considering your time constraints I would probably stick to Ilha, and then a few days in Pemba, a couple of lodges at Pemba have reefs for snorkelling right in front of them.

8Thank you very much Ozzie, you're the best.
Finally, we'll go to Nampula Market (I love markets ;-) and then Ilha and finally Pemba.
Have your heard anything about LAM airlines, I heard they are not very reliable and they tend to cancel flights. Is it true?
Last question and I stop bothering you ;-), do you think it's feasible to leave Ilha early in the morning and get a bus somewhere (I don't know where but I'll find out) to Pemba in the same day.

9I've flown LAM dozens of times. Once you're on their fine. I wouldn't necessarily say lots of cancelled flights, but certainly lots of delays. Make sure you have travel insurance ;)
Yes, you can get to Pemba in one day. Change at Namiola or Monapo, or better still, try to get a chapa direct from Ilha to Pemba. Earlier you leave the better. Getting stranded at Namiola isn't great.
You should arrive by early afternoon.

It's always good to have, and only costs about $30 if you find a good one on the web. It's good to have especially in case you miss a flight. I had a friend who missed had a LAM flight cancelled, missed his flight back to teh UK, and had to buy a new ticket. LAM wouldn't help him out even though it was 100% their fault.
Also in terms of your health, you'd be nuts not to have travel insurance...

Don't worry I do have a travel insurance for my health ;-) but for flight cancellation I don't.
You've just stressed me out with "LAM flight cancelled.";-)
I hope it's not gonna happen to me ;-)
Anyway, Ozzzzzziiieeeee Thhhhaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnkkkk youuuuu soooo mucccchhhh for your hellppppp, I'm very very very gratefulllllllllll
