Edinburgh to Highlands : HelpHi,
I am planning for a trip to Scotland and I will be staying in Edinburgh in September. I will have two spare nigths and would love to visit some part of the Highlands. I would love to see the sea with montains. Choices that I see:
1) Taking a fligth to the Hebridges and drive
2) Taking a fligth to Northwest Highlands : Wick- John O Groats (WIC)
3) Taking a fligth to visit one of the islands : Orkney or Shetland
Could you help me with comments?
Any additional choices would be great as well.
Cheers from Brazil,

Actually I'm about to do the exact same thing this wkd. It's quite easy, but you need to go to Glasgow first.
From Glasgow, there is a 3 hour bus ride to Fort William. I am not sure if that's where you want to go, but that is the part where I am going. It runs pretty often, every hour or so.
To get to Glasgow, you can take a bus, but it takes 1.5 hours. I am taking Scotrail, just under an hour at 50 min, sometimes it can be 40 min.
Here are the links. Good luck!

2If you want mountains, you should probably go west rather than north. Lewis (Stornoway) is flat and boggy (though if you hire a car there you could drive south to Harris which has mountains). Orkney, Shetland and Wick are more rolling countryside than mountainous. You would do best to go to Glasgow and get on a train to Oban - the scenery around there is mountainous. Alternatively, you could hire a car and head out for the Cairngorms or drive to Glencoe and head further west to Skye.

3Why not just go on an organised tour. Plenty to choose from and a 3 day/2 night one will cover a lot of ground.
However considering your choices:
Option 1 is possible
Option 2 is a no go. It would probably be quicker to drive from Edinburgh to the NW Highlands
Option 3 no mountains mainly archeological.
and for future reference fligth is spelt flight !
