Copper Canyon with teenagersI'm very excited because, after 30 years, I'm finally going to Mexico's Copper Canyon in April with some friends. We're arriving in El Fuerte on Holy Saturday, spending Easter in El Fuerte and hoping there will be some festivities there, then boarding the Chepe train on Monday. Returning Saturday.
The thing is, I'm a single mom with two teenage kids. Our budget is very tight. All the lodging I've found below the rim is very, very pricey. Kind of horrifying, actually, compared to what we usually spend. So I just booked a cabana in Creel and figured we'd do day trips out from there. We're traveling with a couple of other friends.
I am going to have to spend money on activities to keep the teens occupied such as horseback riding and taking the tram. If anyone has suggestions for ways we can stay below the rim without spending a lot, please let me know! I speak a little Spanish, not a lot.
I need to have accomodations planned out, because it's too hard with kids to be spontaneous and wander around trying to find a place. It would be like a grumbling parade.

3Last time I was in Urique (2004) there were a couple of reasonably priced small hotels there (actually there are only a couple hotels there, but they were reasonably priced).
El Fuerte is a nice little city. Across the river there are a number of impressive petroglyphs and the remains of an old Spanish outpost along with lots of sub-tropical birds.
As far as Creel, that's a good place to base out of with teenagers. There are a lot of day trips out of there and your hotel can help you get around. Out of Creel there are waterfalls, hotsprings, canyon hikes, day trips or overnighters into the canyon (Batopilas), the lake with horseback riding.

6Better than EL Fuerte would be Urique, either Keith's place or elsewhere. There are inexpensive hotels. If you can reply to me personally, I can give you more info. 7 km above Urique is Guadalupe Coronado a Tarahumara pueblo with a fantastic and primitive Semana Santa, best time to be there is Good Friday. I had a family with 3 male teens there last year and they had a ball, even got one of them painted as a devil along with myself.

8I've been volunteering down there for the last ten years and stayed with Keith (Entre Amigos) many times and never had a bad night. I'd try to get to El Fuerte in the morning, see the local sites such as the fort, the pteryoglyphs, river cruise and one of the things I get a kick out of is giving myself and friends a self guided tour of the major hotels.
Get on the train the next a.m. and get off at Bahuichivo. Catch the bus to the bottom of the canyon(Urique), ask directions to Keith's place and walk up there where you will meet Maruka and/or Thomas, the folks who run the place when Keith is not there. I think Keith, who is now about 70 (my age) has had some health problems.
Thomas and Maruka are brother and sister, Tarahumara Indians, do not speak English (no problem) and are very nice. Ask Maruka to cook up some blue corn tortillas. They have special significance but taste the same as regular corn tortillas. They also have wheat tortillas. You will have kitchen privledges at Keiths or you can walk the quarter mile to DT Urique where they have several pretty good restaurants. I have never gotten sick in MX but did once get sick in Honduras. Was not fun but obviously I lved thru it.
Naranjo, Guadelupe Coronado and Guapalaina are neat little towns to walk to, all beng more or less five miles from Urque. You can also hike into the Arroyos or swim n the river. One of the do not miss thngs is the Good Friday Celebration n Guadelupe Coronado. Get there an hour or so before sundown, hang around till dark and the good stuff starts when t gets dark. Feel free to join n the celebration but you must be respectful.
You can reach me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you want more info. Best of luck to you and the teens.
