My family and I are heading to Tanzania next week and will be arriving in Dar es Salaam sunday at 3 am. We would like to head directly to Arusha and therefore take the first bus leaving in the morning. Is it possible to get a bus ticket the same day or do you have to book in advance? If it's possible i would like to just book the tickets online, but haven't been able to find that.
Hope to get some feedback.

1It should be straightforward. From the airport take a taxi to Ubungo bus station, which is the main intercity terminal. It is not far, 7-8 km I think.
Since Arusha buses start leaving from sunrise and you will be at Ubungo by then, I see no need to buy tickets in advance. When you arrive outside the terminal you'll be thronged by touts trying to take you to different ticket offices. My advice is to ignore their cries and head for Dar Express, Kilimanjaro or another large company which has scheduled departures. You don't want to end up on a bus belonging to a smaller outfit as they can sit there for hours waiting for passengers. Ignore the kids who try to get you to switch buses because "we're leaving right now!"
Prices should be posted on the wall. If you want to inspect the bus before buying your ticket, mention that to the ticket seller and he will probably hold your places while a boy takes you out to the vehicle.
Enjoy the ride! I recommend sitting on the right hand side so you can get stunning views of the Usambara and Pare Mountains along the way, as well as Kilimanjaro.

3Basically there are two ways of buying tickets at Ubungo bus Terminal
1.You can go to Kisutu at the buss offices to buy tickets in advance to avoid the hassle at the Terminal, for your case this one you need a ground handler to this in advance tickets are between 28000-35000tsh now, the ground handler can also arrange the airport transfer to ubungo at 30usd one way
2.You can venture direct to the Terminal, this is not very reliable you have to be tough because of the touts and thieves around there calling them selves bus representatives, you go by telling them you have already booked you Just want to be shown where the following bus can be found( Dar express, ) they will take you there the you can book at the door step of the traveling but otherwise they can make an advantage of you if you try to book with them
Its good to have this organised you can contact (firstname.lastname@example.org) he lives in Dar and cn do this reliably as the time you are arriving is very early before the bus departs

6Thanks for all the replies - all very helpful. Great tip about where we should place us on the bus, as the main reason for taking the bus was to get to see a bit of the country and not only to save money. We will probably take a flight on the return trip, so thanks for sending the link, Alcotteer. Their flight are quite cheap.
