January Duruthu PeraheraHello Everyone,
My boyfriend and I will be travelling to Sri Lanka from January-February 2014. We are interested in seeing the Duruthu Perahera which I understand takes place in Colombo on the 26th-27th of January. Does anyone out there have more information on this event? Are these dates correct?
I have read that accomodation can get very busy during the festival. Is it necessary to book accomodation in advance if we want to stay in central Colombo?
Many thanks in advance for your suggestions and advice!

1We were in Colombo to see this years Navan Maha Perahera, which is larger, happens in central Colombo. Accomodation was no problem. The largest part of tourists are not able or cant be bothered to plan their package tours accordingly, so the spectators at those events are mostly the locals.

2The big Perahera in Colombo is the Navam Perahera which takes place in February around Beira Lake and Gangaramaya Temple. The best place to keep up to date with dates and information is the temple's website:
The Duruthu Perahera that you mention is actually held at Kelaniya, about a half hour (10 km) out of Colombo. Again, the temple very helpfully has a website:
Not sure what accommodation is available at Kelaniya, but you could always stay in Colombo and get a taxi / three wheeler out. I'm sure you'll be the only foreigners there if you do visit! Finding accommodation in Colombo will be no problem.
Enjoy your trip!

Those regional Peraheras are nothing like Kandy Perahera, hence accommodation won't effect that much in area of Colombo.
