1Perhaps driving all the way from Kuching to Sabah would be a bit tiring. Kuching-Miri alone is 800km, 11 hours of drive according to Google Maps. Then you have to cross into Brunei and I'm not sure what the formalities are. Perhaps rent the car only for Sabah, making a loop in Sabah, starting and ending in KK.
By the way, I don't think you can drive on your own to the Danum valley. First of all you'll need a 4WD car, because large parts of the road are a mud track. Then there are some checkpoints and perhaps they won't let you through.
If I had a car, I would use it to explore the area between KK and Brunei, which on paper sounds interesting. Then in theory one could drive across Sabah, from KK to Tawau, passing south of the Maliau basin. I wonder if it could be possible to enter the Maliau basin, although I suspect there are checkpoints and they won't let you through and the road will be a mud track (same situation as in Danum).
Just be aware that the distances are huge and without a local guide you'd need a good GPS navigation system with good maps. Perhaps not everywhere there is accomodation, so you might have to spend a night in the car. Of course that depends on where you drive to.
