Russian River ValleyIn August, my fiancé and I are driving from San Fran to Mendocino, with a stop in the Russian River Valley for 2 nights.
Should we stay in Occidental, Guerneville or Healdsburg?
We want to bike, hike and/or canoe or kayak and be in nature - we will stop at a few wineries but that is not our major

1I'm going to suggest a different option--Jenner. It's right at the mouth of the Russian River--where it enters the ocean. If you want, you can get a room at the Jenner Inn with a kitchen. They have non-kitchen places as well. They are actually a collection of cottages. Their web site has a lost of things to do in the area under "Activities." For example, renting kayaks or hiking in on the beach.
There are other, less expensive places to stay as well.
The downside of Jenner is that it is not exactly the finest restaurant town in the world, although there are a couple of places to eat. That's why I mentioned the kitchen. If dining or some sort of nightlife is important to you, then it's Healdsburg, hands down.
Armstrong Redwoods recreation area is close and is a great place for hikes.
The plural of anecdote is not data.

2Occidental is a tiny village without many accommodations for tourists (I have not been there for years, so it may have changed more recently). Healdsburg has been promoted on this TT for those looking for a wine tasting adventure. Guerneville is a very artsy and gay resort community. Guerneville is located near Alexander Valley wineries and near Jenner, on the coast at the mouth of the Russian River -- many people have promoted Jenner for overnight accommodations on this TT.
Highway #116 is narrow and runs through the redwood forest -- if you wear bright-colored clothes and bicycle along it during the daytime, then it would be a nice ride. Highway #1, along the Pacific Coast, is also narrow, but I have ridden 25 miles along it north of Mendocino as well as in Big Sur. I was with a group of riders both times. The highway through Alexander Valley does not have as much traffic and runs through farmland and rolling hills. Highway #12, from Occidental to Bodega Bay, runs through open farmland and rolling hills -- beautiful scenery.

4Healdsburg has the best choices for food and wine, and it has a picture-perfect plaza in the middle of town. Guerneville is a bit more honky-tonk. Occidental is miniscule, more of a crossroads than a town. Weather will be hottest in Healdsburg. Jenner, right on the coast, is likely to be cool and cloudy.

5Have your cake and eat it too- stay one night in Healdsburg, then the second night in Jenner. Jenner has awesome
kayaking/canoeing at the mouth of the Russian River in a spectacular setting. Healdsburg has the biking out toward the
Anderson Valley and Dry Creek area outside of town. There's also a sand beach in town on the Russian River for kayaking
on calm waters.
