West China into Mongolia early July 2013Hi,
I'm planning on being in North West China for a couple of weeks and then heading overland into Mongolia via the Takashiken (china) border in early-mid July. I'll then slowly hiking/horse riding etc make my way in Mongolia northwards to then exit into Russia at Lake Baikal for the first week in August.
Anyone doing anything vaguely similar and fancy joining forces, please do get in touch!

We (my wife and I, 28M AUS, 26F UK) are trying to work out an itinerary for about a week leaving Ulaanbaatar around 21st July. I know you said early August, not too sure how flexible your dates are.
What we were thinking was something like this:
Ulaanbaatar - Tsenkher Hot Springs - Lake Khuvsgul (2 days horseback riding), meet Tsaatan family (stay overnight if possible) - Ulaanbaatar
Havnt really worked out the finer details yet in terms of driver / guide / transportation but we're working on that.
Let us know if your interested

There are three international border crossings for tourists from Mongolia to Russia.
North Central Mongolia - Altanbulag (by road) Sukhbaatar (by train) - this is the most suitable border crossing closest to lake Baikal.
North West Mongolia - Tsagaanur - possible but than you have a long drive in Russia to the lake.
North East Mongolia - Ereentsav - possible but out of the way for you.
The crossing at Ereentsav may require a permit which needs to be obtained in advance. There is a fourth crossing from Lake Khovsgul to Tuva but this is not an international crossing and is for Russia/ Mongolian passport holders only.
