Trip to Asia - must do's?Hello fellow Lonley Travellers!
I plan on taking a 2 -3 week trip to Asia from Melbourne, Australia within the next 8 months.
I would like to steer clear of the big cities for the majority of the trip, and focus more on 'hidden treasures' and the lovely landscape and nature.
I am an outdoors person and would enjoy something along these lines.
I have absolutely no itinerary at this stage, however I am interested in visiting historical sites such as the Killing Fields in Cambodia used by the Khmer Rouge.
I dont intend to make this trip a luxury one, however a few nights in a nice resort would be something I want to do.
I was told about the Vedana Lagoon Resort which looks lovely.
Any advice would be helpful including
-Dates/season to travel
-Where to go to maximise sightseeing/experience (must do's)
-How much money to take

6three weeks is not even long enough for Cambodia.
3 full days at Angkor Wat is a must. The countryside round battambang is "pleasant", Small towns like Kratie and Kampot are nice places to hang out and many of the smaller towns you might just pass through can be very rewarding (pursat, Kampong chhang, Kampong Thom, Kampong Cham, takeo. and as above Banlung in Rattanakiri Province and Sen Monorom in Mondulkiri Province oh and of course Phnom Phen

7In Cambodia, Of course you should plan to spend a few days in Siem Reap. Angkor Wat is not to be missed. Also check out the Land Mine Museum. It is a great insight into Cambodia's History. More here:
Also the National Museum in Phnom Penh is well worth a visit. . Killing Fields in Phnom Penh and the infamous Tol Sung Prison.
Cambodia is a great place to visit.

8Agree with #7-spend time exploring Cambodia.
Con Dao Island , a short flight from HCMC is good for adventure.
Amiana Resort at Turtle Bay is a good new resort in Nha Trang. Arguably the best in Vietnam. It has the only sea water swimming pool, using water from the ocean-beats getting bleached! It also has the best breakfast in Vietnam with Venetian styles tapas.

9#6 Pursat features prominently in the repatriation of Loung Ung at the end of Khmer Rouge rule, in her 2007 version of First They Killed My Father, Mainstream Publishing, Edinburgh UK.
It's an easy read and, despite its title, is quite uplifting through the eyes of a 5YO girl. I think I'm better prepared for the Killing Fields horrors having read her book. We'll see, in a week's time
