4I read a report on Crazyguy a couple of years ago about someone who had his bike stolen in Nepal. He asked around in that very village and right soon someone had a suspicion of who the thieve might be. Within a day or so he got it back.
In that case it was a local nut job who had just taken the bike because he thought it looked nice. Your case seems more serious. But anyway in your situation I'd really get the local villagers involved. Maybe offer a reward?

5We got leaflets printed and hung them everywhere the next day. It had a reward offered
I cycled round for days to no avail
Gave the fliers to local schoolkids.
Got an article in the newspaper.
The Nepalese police were the most useless (as are most police in the 3rd world) and were only interested in how much it cost and they eventually (reluctantly) gave us a police report. Just in case our insurance may cover a few dollars of the 1000's. Not gonna hold our breath.
After 6 days gave up and headed home.
We think it could all just be a higher reason. We were due to go to Utterkhand, Dehra Dun, Rishikesh, and the region that got hit by the flooding. The place here in Nepal where the bike got stolen had 2 days/nights of non stop rain.

7The hotel had a huge lock on a side steel door that was pried open.
Then our bikes had a Kryptonite cable with a small padlock.
It would've been deemed one of the safest places .
Often we've had them outside. It always depended on the situation as often it'd be impossible and unpracticable to put in the room.
Nepal would also be deemed one of the safest and honest.

8Condolences for the turn of events.
I don't have much experience with Nepal but I have heard that there can be quite sophisticated gangs of thieves on the borders of India.
When I was in India maybe 8 years ago I recall a massive bust on a bicycle stealing gang that had a roaring trade between the bangladesh and west bengal
