I have started planning my first trip to Iran and am considering whether to go up north to Tabriz, Urumieh Lake and Kandovan, or to drop it for the sake of the region south of Yazd (Bam).
Is there any alternative accommodation in Kandovan save the wonderful (but expensive) Laleh Rock Hotel? Not a trace of Kandovan recommendations on this forum, and even fewer results to my internet search. The LP book states prices of approx. $ 340-440 for Laleh, which is prohibitive, and the only alternative would be unfurnished rooms where I would have to carry my sleeping bag. As that is not an option on this trip, I wonder whether I stand a chance at Kandovan at all. I dislike being shuttled on day trips, so I would prefer to stay the night.
Finally, how does Kandovan compare to Cappadoccia with respect to the sights and transport?
I appreciate help on this, thank you.

I came back from Iran 1 week ago. I have been to Kerman. I visited the Kaluts and Rayen. Kaluts is amazing and Rayen castle is also nice. Both of them are well worth visiting. I have also been to Tabriz and Kandovan. Tabriz is a very pleasant city, the people are very friendly. You do not need to stay at Kandovan. Kandovan is interesting but too touristy, 2 hours is enough to visit. I have never been to Cappadocia. If your time allows you visit the Babak Castle. The castle is on the hilltop and the scenery is breathtaking.

4I stay in Laleh hotel last week, very nice equipped with private pool with shower and everything. But it is not as expensive as LP says (because now the exchange rate is pretty good). But they do have cheaper hotel inside, it is just a little bit difficult to find. You have to walk into the village and ask around.
They have four types of room: single, double, suite and royal suite. You can ask for discount and get the suite with approximately 80 $. But FYI, somehow the taxi drivers there will rip u off (as well as the hotel), which they take a very low exchange rate of dollar 1:32000 (when the normal price is 1:36000)
To get there, the cheapest way is to share a taxi from Roghan Medun (in Tabriz) to Osku, and take another cab (maybe not shared) from Osku to Kandovan. It is cheaper.
Last: strongly recommend kandovan honey and butter, it tastes very good. (and FYI: they don't have pistachio in kandovan, strange :\

5Hi, I have been both in Kandovan and Cappadocia and I must say I liked the latter one more. I agree that Kandovan is for 2-3 hours. It is different from Capadoccia as it is still occupied, but it is full with domestic tourists. I visited on a day trip with Mansur Khan (see LP Tabriz tours section) but did not have a feeling of missing anything not staying longer.
