Transportation to and around San IgnacioWe will be arriving in Belize City on a Monday late afternoon and want to make our way to San Ignacio Monday night. In San Ignacio we would like to do a day tour of tubing/kayaking in some caves and see some ruins(local, not Tikal) on the day after that. Tours seem a bit pricey, would it be better to rent a car and do these things on our own? (American couple)
Side note: will be in Belize for Belize's Independence Day. Where is the place to be??

1If you have enough cash to rent a car, I won't stop you. It costs like 80.00 used or more for the day or even more. Or u can take express bus from Belize city. Only cost less like 10 usd to San Ignacio. Lol
(But bus ride is dramatic sometime)
There are many Independence Day activities in every districts....such as carnival.

5If you can find a decent rental car in Belize for US$50 a day, even on a weekly rate off-season, you'll be EXTREMELY lucky. And don't forget there is a 12.5% sales tax, a one-time US$5 airport fee (if you rent at the international airport) and some of the car rental companies push hard for you to accept CDW at US$12-$20+ per day. Gas is around US$6 a gallon. Get an idea of prices and types of cars available on the Crystal Car Rental site -- they're the largest car rental company in the country. The prices are in US dollars.
Still, in San Ignacio it's worth it to have a car at least part of the time to get to local Maya sites like Xunantunich and to go up into the Mountain Pine Ridge. There are three or four car rental places in San Ignacio.
If you don't rent a car and drive to San Ignacio, which also isn't a bad idea, because there's a good deal to see and do along the way, there are several shuttles. William's Shuttle via the Parrot Nest website is a good one.
You can also now fly to San Ignacio. Tropic Air has a couple of flights a day to the Maya Flats airstrip west of San Ignacio. A bit expensive, but convenient.
For those who haven't been to San Ignacio recently, there are a lot of changes downtown. Burns Avenue is now mostly closed to cars and is a sort of pedestrian mall. There's a new welcome center, just opened, which is very well done and informative, and it connects to Burns Avenue via an alley. There's pay parking at the welcome center guarded lot -- starts at BZ$2. Also, while it's not a bus station, the buses all now stop and pick up next to the welcome center. Fare from Belize City is around BZ$7 or $8, though you'll have to get from the international airport to the bus terminal in Belize City, a US$25 cab ride.
Lots of Independence Day activities around the country. Probably most in Belize City, but as noted also in San Pedro and elsewhere. September is a slow time for tourism, but quite a few expat Belizeans come home for the holidays.

6A car is a good idea.
You could drive to the Xunantunich and Cahal Pech sites. Both have an admission fee.
For the other activities, have a look at Ian Anderson's Caves Branch. You can drive there.
Re: Independence Day
In Belize City, there is usually a parade -- marching bands, dancing girls, lots of kids. It lasts a couple of hours -- no big deal (for me). Mostly, Belizeans just enjoy the day off and head to the parks with their kids. No big deal. Maybe some fireworks at night.
Keep an eye on the BTB website because they usually publish a list of events. Don't expect to see anything published until about August.
And ths site might list the happenings on Ambergris Caye...

10I always rent a car for San Ignacio. It gives you the ability to stay at a lodge further away from town and not have to worry about how you will get out and back. Cabs are expensive. The sites you will go top are easy to drive to and it will save you money over taking the tours. Do it. Crystal is good and at the airport.
