Surat Jalan in Sentani for UK TouristsHi,
We are heading to Sentani in a couple of weeks to see the Lake festival and don't intend to travel into Jayapura. From there we are flying to Wamena for some trekking in the Baliem Valley.
We have just discovered there has been some diplomatic unrest between the UK and Indonesian governments regarding the opening of a Free Papua office in Oxford.
Have any UK citizens travelled recently to West Papua and had any problems obtaining their Surat Jalan?
After reading many reports, we have some confusion about where best to obtain our Surat Jalan. Are we best trying for it in Sentani (as we are not going into Jayapura) , or is it best to travel to Wamena and try for it there.

1hi there,i have heard recently that the sentani festival may have been cancelled this year?unable to verify this today.
due to flooding?as for your travel permit......best if you get it at sentani polisi....close to airport....wamena polisi do not issue the permits, but you will have to present yourself at polisi station to have the permit stamped.

I want to ask about the permit. How long does it take to get the permit? Can I get it in one or two hour in Sentani police? I plan to be arrived in Sentani in the morning, then fly to Wamena with the latest flight in the afternoon. So is it possible to get the permit during that window time? And How close is Sentani police station from the airport? 5 to 10 mins walking or more?
Thank you very much :)

4hi arga, generally if you bring all copies of passport/airline ticket/indonesian visa/2xpassport photos/it only takes an hour to be processed at the sentani polres station....it is close to airport......ask at the little polisi station near airport exit gates(left hand side)for directions.....or grab an "ojek"(motorcycle taxi)and they will take you there.....a small "tip" will make it process quickly!!!
they will ask you to make photocopies so you can hand over in wamena /other places.
one problem you may encounter is depending on what time your flight arrives ,is that most of the 4x daily flights up to wamena leave by midday(due to weather problems late in day)trigana air call their flights "flight1" flight 2 etc.....it is also a real struggle to get your boarding pass as the lines are chock a block, with lots of luggage.....it is worth hiring a local porter at the airport to do your boarding pass/luggage....you will spot them by their orange vests.....it takes a lot of stress away......100,000 rp is basic price for their service/hope this helps

Sorry for the late reply, but only just got internet again (sat in Makasar airport waiting for our flight to Sentani).
Good news that the festival is on - hopefully it's tomorrow and the next few days.
You did nearly kill me with your news about the cancellation, as just as we sat down here we got a text message from the Ahe island resort (from Nabire) where we are due to go after the Baliem Valley, to see whalesharks. They have had to close due to being attacked by the locals. That is all we needed as we have paid in full and booked our flights. So some major emailing and research to be done quickly.

After the festival we headed to Wamena for 6 days as planned for trekking and then back to Sentani. Ahe Island did not re-open and went bankrupt, so we lost all our money that we had to pay upfront, which was about 20 millionRp. We did manage to get our filght from Sentani to Nabire refunded (but only because Lion Air had changed it 5 times). Luckily we hadn't booked a flight from Nabire to anywhere
We ended up arriving into Sentani from Wamena and just wanted to get away ASAP, so paid 6 million for the 2 of us and flew to Makassar, and then to Manado on North Sulawesi and went to Bunaken for 5 days. Lots of money for flights but we needed somewhere to chill and lick our wounds.
In Sentani we eneded up staying at the Ratna Indah for 300,000Rp with A/C and hot water (no email address, but strangely they have wifi). Room was OK but not great
The better hotel seemed to be the Rasen, but it was full.
Here is a link with some details
and here is an email the LP gives for the Rasen - firstname.lastname@example.org
Both hotels are in easy walking distance from the airport. Come out and go through the car park to the entrance booths - straight on, 2nd left and 1st right brings you to Rasen. If full then carry on and go around the back of the hotel to a small lane and turn left, this brings you to the Ratna Indah.
Hope this helps
