15#13 is giving irrelevant advice. These crews are kept together as a group, and they are contracted as a group. There is zero chance for the OP to work as an itinerant, and somebody needs to say so. No car, no visa, no help, it isnt going to happen. These arent the days of Steinbeck, dont encourage the OP to think it is

16I rew up in rural US, and the use of harvest labor continues. Here is one response:
AG - Wheat Harvest Help Must be reliable. P/T harvest help. Physical labor req. must be willing to work overtime. Gavilone Grain 5755 S Hoover / 522-4871 Drug free workplace EOE.
Source - Wichita Eagle
the "Wichita Eagle" is a Kansas paper. It woud be ideal if theOP could work with a crew that goes from Texas to Canada, since they move and feed the crew. He could also contact farm associations to get some leads. IT won't come on a silver platter, but it can be done. It is not the easiest way, but a deterjmined and flexible lad could make it work. Also a persistant lad who cheks with state labor offices, farm associaitons, locfal papers, and anyone else.
Yes, we want to give realistic advice, but we don't need to throw up spirals of barbed wire and say that this string of reasons will prick the baloon.
