Undecided Diver: The reef or sharks? A little help?Hi all,
I am in Australia doing an internship and I'll only have enough time/ money for one dive trip unfortunately. I want to go in July or August and the natural choice appears to be a live aboard on the barrier reef. BUT... I've seen spectacular reefs before in SE Asia and while awesome, I am concerned that the reef dive after dive for 3 days might start to look the same. You know... "Wow, another turtle. yawn. oh look. Nemo.... Again". This is definitely a good problem to have but there's also the opportunity to dive with whale sharks at Ningaloo in WA and cage dive with great whites in SA. What do you guys think? Should I take the leap and scratch the barrier reef off the bucket list or break the mold and swim with sharks? Thanks!

1We've been to Ningaloo and swimming (not diving, as you're not allowed to) with the whale sharks was incredible and top of my list of great things I've done/seen. BUT they are not there in July and August so that might just answer that question for you. They are at Ningaloo in late April/May/June but then the whales arrive on their journey south.
You can dive at Ningaloo, of course, the old Navy Pier being very well known for diving but the organised trips to watch the whale sharks do not allow diving, just snorkelling and, quite frankly, you don't need to dive to have a fab time as you swim along side them when they are near the surface. They use spotter planes in radio contact with the boats to inform the skipper where to go to see them.

2Thanks #1... I heard different though... I heard the whale sharks are around till the end of july. But if I decided to do it I would probably go in June just incase. I heard the diving at Ningaloo is pretty sweet, I assumed that included diving with whale sharks. Regardless, it still sounds amazing... but I remain undecided... I guess it depends on how difficult/ expensive it is to get to Exmouth and around.
