Taking a German rental car to Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina?I am renting and returning a car in Germany. Am I able to take this car outside of the Schengen Agreement countries and into Croatia and/or Bosnia without too much trouble? Is this something I should check with my car rental company, or could this pose a problem at border patrol? Thanks!

2Basically, there should not be any kind of problem concerning border authorities because they usually don't pay much attention about the rented cars or their drivers. The reason is pretty obvious. On the borders between Croatia and Schengen area countries, but also between Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina there is very intensive flow of rented cars. There are probably hundreds of them daily on any single more frequent border crossing.
So, the main issue is if the rental company has certain specific rules & conditions about the fact that their cars pass into Croatia or Bosnia & Herzegovina. As far as I know, most of the rental companies, especially those based in Germany or Italy, for example, don't have any restrictions fore their car traveling in the two mentioned countries, but it is possible that they could ask for increased amount concerning the insurance or similar stuff.
Concluding, your question is to be resolved exclusively with your rental company. If you agree all the terms with them concerning your travel to Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina, I can assure you that the border authorities will not bother you at all.

3I checked this a few years ago and while Croatia (which is to join the EU soon anyway) is less of a problem, Bosnia unfortunately is. I had not realized my plans back then, but as far as I remember none of the larger chains allowed the latter.
Bear in mind that at the border crossings I know between Croatia and Bosnia your car papers are checked. They might demand written confirmation of the car's owner to enter Bosnia if it isn't you. Also for Bosnia, you need a Green Insurance Card that features that country (or buy insurance at the border, but then you probably won't be covered for theft and the like).

4Even more important? How do you plan to get from Germany to Croatia? Both Austria and Switzerland have vignettes that you need to buy at the border or in the case of Austria, at gas stations before the border.
Be sure to ask the car rental company about these as they must be affixed to the car window to be valid.
