Wife's first trip to Europe. Doing Paris and Rome. Need 3rd spotPlanning a trip to Western Europe for early September, and traveling with my wife and our 18 month old daughter (11 days). It's my wife's first trip to Europe, i've been a handful of times. I know, I know, we should have fit Europe in before we had the baby.
We are set on Paris & Rome. We need recommendations for the 3rd spot. Since the first two are big cities, it would be nice to make the 3rd destination a smaller city, less mainstream, slower pace, with good scenery, good cafes and pastries.
We'll visit 3 destinations and stay a full 3 days in each place, to avoid to much moving around, checking in, checking out, transit. We'll leave a day of travel on the first and last day of the trip, for a total of 11 days. Traveling with a toddler is challenging enough, even if you're relaxing in one spot. The idea is to make the trip now, while the toddler flies for free, and I can carry her on a baby carrier and/or light-weight stroller.
Recommendations for the 3rd spot and advice is much appreciated.

4lucapal, thanks. Mostly traveling by airplane. I like driving, and am open to renting a car. Trains are fine for day trips, but with the baby, I don't want to carry all the luggage and child in a busy Paris train station.
What are some good recommendations for day trips outside Paris and Rome?
As far as budget... not a 5 star vacation, but want to stay in nice hotels/apartments. We don't drink alcohol and fine dining with a toddler is not a good idea. I imagine we will save money on food/drinks and put that into other things.

5Are you going to fly between Paris and Rome?
If so,then I'd agree with the day trips (or even short overnight stay in a smaller place near Paris,or near Rome).
There are some really good past threads on here about day trips/overnights,particularly near Paris (search box,top right)...have a look at some of the links (by poster french_mystique I think ).

6Good daytrips from Rome include Tivoli,Ostia Antica,Orvieto (worth an overnight at least....even a few days as a base, particularly if you hire a car),Viterbo, the Lakes (eg Bracciano),the Abbey of Montecassino...there are many other possiblities.
Again. if you use the search box you will find more information on these and others.....
