Puno -- Homestay on Taquile and back to Cusco on my ownHello fellow travelers
I would like to travel from Puno with my family and do a homestay on Taquile on Lake Titicaca, hopefully with a brief stop at los Uros.
I have heard/read you can just wander to the docks at Puno in the morning and find a boat out and once on the island you can easily find a local family to stay with for the evening.
My question is how to figure out the return from Taquile to Puno the next day and to coordinate the leg from Puno to Cusco the next afternoon.
Has anyone done this WITHOUT a professional tour group that could help me out with this.
We are interested in combi/collectivo travel if possible or local buses.
We would prefer to give our money directly to the boat captain or the local families so they can benefit.
Thanks to the community for all the great postings so far.

There is no need whatsoever to contract the services of a tour company. Many dozens visit Amantaní and Taquile daily and of those many will be doing so independently. Public boats ply the Puno-Taquile route. I didn't visit Taquile but I did spend a couple of days on Amantaní and it was indeed very easy to find lodgings. The system has become sufficiently popular that it's quite formalised now. Islanders are very hospitable and you won't have to look long to find a bed. More likely, it will find you!
A boat back to Puno should allow you to get to the bus station in time for an afternoon bus to Cusco, which is only 6ish hours away. I did Amantaní - Capachica - Puno - Copacabana in a very comfortable day so your plan should work out fine. Just ask on the outbound boat when return trips depart. Unless someone here has the boat timetable in mind - would not surprise me!

2This is actually easy, and preferable vs. taking one of the packaged tours you get at any Puno hotel/hostel. Just get to the dock in Puno at 7am, and book your own transport. I went independently to Taquile and Amantani both. I believe the independent boats go to Amantani first, where I stayed overnight. But you could probably just stay on the boat and go directly to Taquile island. If not, the Taquuile boats leave Amantani around 9 in the morning. Either way, you'll find that your arrival time helps you see the islands while avoiding the big tourist groups on the package tours out of Puno.

3Do it independently, this way you money will benefit the islanders and not a travel agency or hotel in Puno who keep the biggest part of what you pay for themselves.
As soon as you are ready to leave Puno to Cusco take a cab to the bus terminal and leave Puno with the first Cusco bound bus, there should be at least one every hour almost around the clock.
There might be more buses leaving Juliaca to Cusco than from Puno to Cusco. Power is probably the company with the most frequent buses but don't expect much luxury on the six hour ride.
