3We did Leh to Srinagar two years ago, we took a few days to do it, hired a couple of vehicles.
Leh to Mulbekh
Mulbekh to Panikhar (towards Zanskar in Suru valley...if I were to do it again, I would go further, closer to the Nun and Kun mountains). You do have to change taxi's if you do this, as you have to take a Kargil taxi.
Panikhar to Sonamarg
Sonamarg to Srinagar
It depends on how you want to do it, you can do it cheaper of course, by just going to kargil for a stop and then on to Srinagar. Sonamarg is a lovely place, it's only 3 hours abouts to Srinagar, but it's such a beautiful place, have been there a couple of times.
September is fine, we were there in the middle to late September.
There isn't much to see in Kargil, but it's a good place to have a rest overnight if you wish....you could consider Leh to Mulbekh, Mulbekh to Sonamarg and then onwards.
Be prepared for delays, there are lots of landslides on this road, and you sometimes have to wait for hours, sometimes days (although this never happened to us) for the landslide to be cleared.
In Srinagar, I've stayed in the Chicago houseboats a couple of times, which was really good, watch out for people suggesting you stay here or there, Kashmiris can be pretty annoying with their constant pestering to get business from you, it's usually best to try and know where you will want to stay before hand, or go to the house boat association.
