Buying bus tickets online?I am flying into Cancun, Mexico where I will stay for only a few days. After that I will travel to Chetumal, Mexico via ADO bus and then on from there to Flores, Guatemala.
My problem is the typical "onward travel" issue. I'm flying United Airlines into Cancun on a one way ticket so I need proof of onward travel before boarding my flight in Canada.
I have tried contacting the two bus companies that I know have routes between Chetumal, Mexico and Guatemala. One simply has not replied to multiple emails and the emails to the other bus company bounced.
Does anyone have any advice on how I could possibly purchase a bus ticket from Chetumal to Flores, online and in advance of my travel?

Please clarify, is it the airline, United, that is asking you for proof of onward travel? I ask because I'm sure I've traveled with United before from Canada to Mexico without being asked to provide proof.

2One of the Belizean water taxi companies is an ADO agent -- maybe you can reserve with them...
I'm interested to know who you have tried to contact already. I'm guessing ADO is one.

4The problem, as you have already found out, is dealing with companies in two countries which have Spanish as the native language.
Mexico bus travel is considered the world's best and even tops the USA Greyhound system.
That said, bus company websites can be hard to nvaigate, especially if you want to purchase ticket on line.
The bus company for the Yucatan - Cancun area of Mexico is ADO. I have 2 phone numbers, both in Mexico:
5133-5133 or 01-800-009-9090
You might need an international operator who speaks Spanish
Guatamala bus companies are not as user friendly.
A suggestion would be to buy a REFUNDABLE plane ticket from Cancun to your destination. Get your bus ticket Cancun to the Belize border in Cancun, and then bus ticket from Belize border onward.
Then REFUND your unused plane ticket.
Mexico bus travel is easy. But throwing in a third-world country complicates everything.

5Tell them they're full of it. You need no such thing and they're just being difficult... and it's unusual for United to do that: I flew with them one way to Mexico just recently and they asked for nothing.
Perhaps you made the (sorry...) mistake of calling up and asking directly, in which case they're reading off a script. The reality is that they probably won't say anything at the gate.

8Nah, do not call. I don't get it why people can't grasp this concept. When you call, they will read off the "official" script and they'll just make you worried. Just get on the plane and go (with a backup plan to either buy a refundable ticket or have some itinerary printed out if necessary, which it almost definitely won't be.)

9Unless it's changed again the return ticket thing is no longer in effect. As I am never sure of my return I have been buying one way tickets for several years now. Of course I never fly a screwed up outfit like United.
As far as bus travel I never have a problem buying online but in 99% of case it is not necessary except during major holidays.
