1You will want to stay on Sukhumvit, ideally within close proximity to either Soi 4 or Soi 21. Main nightlife areas are Soi 4 (Nana) which which you will find Nana plaza. This consists of several floors of gogos and there are some open air bars on Soi 4 itself. Further up is Soi Cowboy which is 1 street full of gogo's and bars. Youtube either nana plaza or soi cowboy to get a better idea of what they are like.
There are several clubs you can also hit. Main ones are Climax (Soi 11) and Insanity (soi 12). Most taxi drivers will take you there for free as they take a commission for bringing in customers.
There is also Patpong but tbh I recommend to steer clear of this as a big group of 1st timers + in bar scams will not make for a pleasant evening. I suggest you check out Sukumvit Psycho or Bangkok Addcits forum for specific info on each of the nightlife areas. Personally I always stay on Soi 4.
X rated wise I don't think you will see anything of that nature in the above mentioned areas. In some bars girls may at some point lose an item of clothing when dancing but that's as far as it goes. Get a taxi 2 hours up the road to Pattaya where all your expectations will not only be met but exceeded. (pattaya addicts forum) I think for a bday party a few nights in Pattaya will be perfect.
Bangkok is a great city though so I would spend a few days there to see the sights or go to Pattaya first and then do a few days in Bangkok on the tail end of the trip to wind down and do some sight seeing.
In terms of things to do there are lots of things so it depends on what your preference is. Check out this video showing a selection (25) of things to do and see in Bangkok. Try do as much as you can as it really is a great city.
In terms of food there is plenty of choice. If you want western food then you will find lots of choices on Sukhumvit but in terms of local food try to experience everything from street food stalls to food courts to restaurants. Sudhas and Rosabieng are 2 of my favorite places to eat. Lots of choice in the malls too like Terminal 21, MBK ect...
Don't use tuk tuks, although maybe once for experience would be good, If you want to see a temple and a tuk tuk driver says its close he is lying. Don't let tuk tuk drivers take you to see any gems or hotels, in fact don't let them take you anywhere you were not already planning on going. Taxis are cheap so use them freely although traffic in bangkok is generally a nightmare try to use the BTS/MRT Skytrain as much as possible. Moto taxis are good too.
Any other questions feel free to ask although if you want more specific nightlife info I don't think this is the forum for it. Bangkok addicts and it's sister forum pattaya addicts should suffice.

3Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy. Don't bother with Patpong.
However, if you really want to have "fun" Pattaya is far better than Bkk. Cheaper too.
Hmmm, I see that I have repeated what wellred wrote, but I agree with him. It isn't called "fun city" for nothing.
Just remember the condoms ( available almost everywhere ).

4I think the above comments are pushing you to Pattaya as a superior destination for bachelors and I really don't agree. Bangkok is a multidimensional experience while Pattaya is a beach with tons of bars. Outside of Nana Plaza, Soi Cowboy and yes Patpong(not so bad for the experienced)there are many many other areas, in fact an argument could be made that the whole length of Sukumvit Rd has areas of interest. There are places on Soi 22 for example. Pattaya might be slightly cheaper but it is like comparing New York City to someplace in New Jersey. If you want to leave Bangkok then head to a more balanced place like Hua Hin.

6Eden club is ok but this is a group of lads out trying to have a mad one. And I suspect they will enjoy the experience far more going to places like queens club or baby dolls or xzone as opposed to cowboy which tbh had gone right downhill last few years.
I love Bangkok don't get me wrong so I think the best thing would be to try both places. Pattaya is not a taxi ride away so no excuse not to. Plus there is a beach albeit a horrible one.

8Bangkok Post used to have a 2 page spread by Bernard Trink that reviewed all these sort of places.

9Eden is for the serious enthusiast, not for having a laff.
I don't recommend Patpong as it has too many clip joints, and I'm not going to write all about it here.
Pattaya is the cheese for a boys night out. Start on Walking St and see what happens.
Dave, it were a crying shame what they done to the Night Owl. He was essential reading for me for years.

10I think Eden is over rated tbh. If you want that experience go to devils den in Pattaya. Else in Bangkok try mango, Annie's, Snow White or Nataree/Posiden.
Still think Pattaya for a few nights would go down a treat. Yeah walking st is great but soi lk metro area has so many gogos now it's become an evenings worth of entertainment in itself. Trust me when I say the hands on nature in babydolls or xzone will not be equalled anywhere.
