Georgia- where to trek and how to getHave read through many of the posts here on the forum, good information, but would love to have some focused, updated information to decide as follows:
Looking at a 7-14 day trip to Georgia in August, with 18 year old son (both of us are competent mid-range hikers, not mountaineers). May extend this to a party of 4, with wife and daughter based on the following decisions- any information most appreciated:
Time: I see that there are 3 main hiking centers: Kazbegi, Svaneti and Tusheti.
Kazbegi- easiest to get to and best for single day hikes.
Svaneti- harder to get to and suitable for longer multi-day trek.
Tusheti- seems to be even harder to get to than Svaneti, but well worth it.
Is it reasonable to try and do all three regions in a 14 day framework?
If we do a week, I seem to hear that we should be considering just Kazbegi- agree?
If we have 10 days can we include two sites? Which two?
Does anybody know how long it takes to get from Tbilisi to Svaneti or Tusheti, since the new road has been built?
Is flying a reasonable and reliable option? Costs?
I prefer not to rent a car, yes to more or less convenient public transportation, not looking to buy expensive "packages" but could consider one or two services if that would cut things down. Budget- moderate.
What I sense is that in most cases we can trek alone....any recommendations on the horseback trek?

I thought about your trip, you can see during 7 days khazbegi and Svaneti together where you can travel by public transport without any problems but in this tour there will not be many trekking paths.
You can also go to Tusheti - Khevsureti - Khazebgi during 14 days, these places are near at each other. you'll need public transport only from Tbilisi to Tusheti and last day from Khazbegi to Tbilisi. You will walking by foot during all tour, (you can hire horses), this tour is more spectacular but more difficult than first one was.
If you have any questions contact me :)

3Thanks, are you saying that you recommend Tusheti- Khevsureti-Khazbegi insted of going to Svaneti for reasons of saving travel time or you feel that it is preferable for what we want to do? What is the travel time from Tbilisi to Tusheti like? Can you describe why you feel this is better than Svaneti, as it really is more or less of a choice between them.
How does Borjomi-Kharagauli national park compare with the two? Thanks for the input?

Firs of all I want to tell you that both of these places Svaneti and Tusheti are very beautiful, but the difference is that road of the Tusheti is more extremal than Svaneti's road where is concrete road still Mestia, but not in Ushguli. There are more wild situation in Tusheti than into the Svaneti, Mestia which is center of Svaneti has already more modern infrastructure than Tusheti.
To get into Tusheti it needs about 5 hours (240km) , but you will need jeep (4X4) for last 90 km and for Svaneti you will need about 8 hour (500km) these road is good but to get in Ushguli you will need jeep (4X4) for 40 km.

7Now about Borjomi-Kharagauli national park
It's quite different than Tusheti and Svaneti. There is very beautiful nature by forests, Broad-leaved forests, but there are not old towers and old villages as they are in Tusheti and Svaneti.
Trekking path are various, paths are for one day and for several days.

8Looking into it a bit more, I am wondering if in 14 days we could do trekking in both the Svaneti and Tusheti area? I realize that the transportation is not easy to either of them but I see from reading that it is possible...we will need to hir a driver and jeep to get to Tusheti?
What are the temperatures like in mid-August in both regions? Rain?
How long doest transportation take from tbilisi to tusheti?
Thanks for the info!

9Shota- thanks for the tip. We will be for one week on an easier route with son and wife, taking in Kazbegi, and then one week with son and myself which we want to see if we can do a 4-5 day trek. So we will have all in all 7 additional days to arrange for a good trek- from Tbilisi airport- how long will it take us to get to Tusheti more or less? Is it more or less difficult these days than to get to Svaneti? I do welcome your tips and suggestions- thanks. We are talking around middle of August. Cheers.

10Dunetz: we are thinking of doing up to a week's trekking around Kazbegi area but have only just started looking into it (we've just heard about inexpensive flights to Georgia from where we live). I am still doing my homework, but would be grateful if you could give me some idea of your travel arrangements and costs involved. Are you going independently or through an agency? We also plan to travel mid August. Thanks for any information :)
