When is Yuanyang at it's best? Now?I am in Vietnam right now and could be at Yuanyang in about a week. Just wondering if they are nice mid May. I am not going to bother getting a visa if they are not flooded and at their most beautiful. I have read that they are nicest in winter and early spring, but this is not exact enough for me, i may have just missed it. Thanks

2The best time to see the Yuanyang terraced rice fields is during February and March. This is when villagers water the terraces in preparation for ploughing. The water in the fields reflects the sunshine and creates many colors. Yet, the terraced fields also have seasonal beauty. In September, when the rice is ripe, the mountains turn a golden yellow color.

5I've been there the beginning of November, and most of them are already flooded then. But now, the rice will be in the green stage and actively growing. So if that doesn't interest you and there isn't anything in this part of China you want to see, then maybe don't bother trying to get the Chinese visa and coming.

6I've been there twice actually, once (2006) in September, and it was all yellow and quite beautiful, just before harvest. There were hardly tourists there at the time (I think it was also pre-Lonely-Planet time), free of charge and other hassles, with no guest houses, and we just roamed the place alone.
But seeing the flooded terraces in the postcards sold out there, I promised myself I'd come again in the winter. In early March 2010 I was there again. It was the worst year since Yunnan and Guangxi experienced terrible drought that winter, but the terraces were flooded and beautiful all the same (there were also tons of tourists).
The locals told us the terraces are flooded December-Early April, but even within this time limit it doesn't look exactly the same. Each one told us a different story - some say December is the best (because of the "sea of clouds"), others say January, others say late March-Early April, just before the water is gone.
