1The major fireworks show launches fireworks from barges near the Statue of Liberty and can be seen from NJ, Manhattan (crowded), Brooklyn, or from the numerous boats which sell tickets specifically for that purpose. The fireworks are timed to classical music which is broadcast on local radio. I've seen that type of display in PA and it is un-freaking-forgettable. Simply fantastic!!
Central Park also has a fireworks show which is said to be quite splendid, but not the super huge fantasm that the harbor show is.

3One wonders if fireworks will be permitted in the forested areas at all...Some years ago we were over nighting in a State Park on the other side of the Hudson... Some folks,"up from the city" were setting off their own display(rockets & all) ... When the Ranger showed up, she had three State Patrol units in tow... They left ,quickly, with escort ... I imagine one of the larger cities along the I-90, would be a better prospect than within the Park ... carracar

Anyone have suggestions for farther north? Syracuse? Saratoga Springs? I'm sure I'll find something in most places, but it would be nice to find a good show if anyone knows of one.

7I live in NYC but was born and raised in Scranton.
In Scranton people mainly set off fireworks at private parties. Every town will have a firework show.
In NYC you go to jail for setting of fireworks at private parties. People still do. Manhattan is quiet but Queens/Brooklyn will be like Tet offensive in Vietnam. Keep your windows rolled up.
The best place would be along the river promenade in Brooklyn above the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in Brooklyn Heights. Even if you hate driving in NYC, it is worth it. July 4 is a holiday so traffic won't be that bad. You will have to pay for parking but to see the statue of liberty lit up in fireworks on july 4 is the best possible way to see fireworks.

9I decided to go with Syracuse for their Jazz Fest.
Always open to interesting things (historic, natural) in that neighborhood.
