To tour or not to tour?Hi there
It seems there are many posts regarding hiring drivers or booking tours on this forum and others, eg TA.
Our question is - is it that hard and/or time consuming to travel by public transport in Sri Lanka – bus and trains?
We'd appreciate your advice as we’re hoping to visit Sri Lanka in August/September for 2-3 weeks and would prefer to use predominantly public transport and possibly hire a private driver for a couple of trips. It's not a $$ reason, more that we like immersing ourselves in local travel.
Appreciate your advice.

2I've been to Sri Lanka several times and always used public transport whenever possible, except for when my back is dodgy!
Main train lines fan out from Colombo to Kandy, Ella, Galle and Anuradhapura. Buses of various classes are plentiful. Go for the 'luxury' buses for long distance where there's no easy train option.

I just've seen your query, as I came back after a wonderful tour in Maldives with a two day stop at Colombo, I would rather advise you it is advisable to you to use a private transportation as it is a big pain to find and to get in to a local bus/train or any public transport in Colombo city, if you are familiar with the country then obviously you may not find it difficult, but I tell you it is a nightmare catching a bus or a train on a sunny day, I went with my fiancee, first day was Exhausting as the weather was extremely hot. I managed to get a local hire van with a nice English speaking driver with the help from my hotel, in fact he was the owner of the van, him self who was driving so he was generous and took us to most of the historic and cultural interest places, he charged us a very nominal price. We really enjoyed those two days. It is indeed a beautiful country to visit, next time I would stay for more days to discover the island. Please PM me if you require any further details.
