Sri Lanka in 9 Im daysHi All,
Im planning for my upcoming trip to SL and here it's look like:
D1. Arriving in Colombo by air at 8pm.
D2. Colombo - Kandy by train
D3. Kandy - Nuwara Eliya by bus
D4. Nuwara Eliya - Colombo by train
D5. Clombo - Beach: swimming (which one)?
D8. Colombo - HK 9fligt departs on mindnight the next day, meaning I have to be at the airport by the end of D8)
Here are a few questions:
1. is it unsafe for a solo female traveller to travel alone by train in SL?
2. Is the itinerary too much of a haste?
3. If so should I just cut Kandy as I do not have much time for day trips, and just go to Nuwara Eliya?
4. Which beach I should head for for swimming since Im travelling by the end of May?
5. Should I just keep a beach in the east as well as Colombo if I want a relaxing holiday?

1The days that you've listed as "travel days" will most likely be just that. You'll always get there in Sri Lanka, but not usually on time!
Without knowing what it is you want to see, it's hard to comment fully. But I'd suggest skipping Nuwara Eliya. From Kandy you can day trip out or see the local sites.
Beaches north of Colombo in Negombo are easiest with your time limitations, though not my personal faves

3Then what about Ella? A little closer to Colombo and some nice walks there (waterfall & Little Adams Peak). Great tea plantation there as well. Train from Kandy is fun. Then take the line all the way back to Colombo. Either way, it'll be a lot of travel.
When are you going? That'll change suggestions possibly.

I would say it is indeed a doable tour as per your itinerary,
1. I do not recommend for you to travel all by your self by train as it is safe if you travel along with a group or at least a partner. Suggest you to use a private hire car with a driver/guide which would be safe and you have the privacy as well.
2. The Itinerary looks good only thing matters is the time you will be traveling, when will you be traveling??
3. Nuwaraeliya if fabulous as I was there last January and the place was excellent.
4 The rain is bit high on the South & West coasts during the period of May and August,
5. Try the northern and eastern coastal areas, specially Trinco / Passikuda beach, it is awesome.
If you prefer just try to send a mail to the following company who made the tour arrangements for me, get a quote and see if they come up with a reasonable rate: firstname.lastname@example.org

5Im travelling by the end of May. Now just try my luck to see if there would be nice weather on the beach. Im now planning to go to Mirissa, at least can see the whales. One more question: is it feasible NOT to pre-book accomdation? Would book in advance for colombo though, the 1st city after leaving the plane at 8pm.
I'll try to enquire the company u suggested James. The traon thing is really worrying me.

Yep, it is ideal if you prebook your accommodation when traveling to Sri Lanka as most of the hotels where I stayed were fully booked during the time I visited Sri Lanka, luckily I managed to book everything well in advance through agoda.com, I guess I paid fairly reasonable rates as it was online purchasing. I am sure you will be quoted a good price as I had a very good first impression on them from the day I started the tour and till the end date.

I am not sure about the weather in later May. However as soon as you arrive at BIA ( Airport) I suggest you find a rest house close by probably in Negambo ( if you are gonna spend the day)
Trains to Kandy generally leave Colombo Fort station in the morning ( you can find the details on the train schedules)
also if your on a budget there is an place right next to the Tooth Temple called Old empire. this is in the heart of the town and is managed by an couple with. ( Kandy is a must you will not regret it)
You will need a day to rest arriving at Nuwara eliya , it can be colorful at nights but safer to stay in as it gets late as not much people will be around to assist you besides it gets colder by night ( but plenty of scenic beauty)
Oh there is no train from Nuwara eliya to Colombo but you can take a Bus or a taxi to a place called NANUOYA which is the closest place with a train station to Nuwara eliya. ( and yes its advisable to take a EXPO Train Carriage.
well colombo beaches are not the greatest as it can get packed unless you try Negambo again or Mt. Lavinia or take a trip down to Unawatuna where you ll love the beach ( since you have two days) its towards the south of SL but if sunny side is up you could stay at the beach for hours :)
and its only 5 hours max away from Airport
However if you like i could send you all the links you might need with some places you can crash :) P.s. Unawatuna is a beach that used to have a Coral reef protecting swimmers from rough waves. you can safely swim given that the weather is not bad.
anyway if you do require more facts and schedules mail me on Ujjala.email@example.com
