1The castle towers over the town so you'll see it easily. It is to the north of the town centre on the eastern bank of the river.
The birds you are thinking about are the rare Bald İbis(kelaynak in Turkish)are located along the cliffs of the river. The following is an interesting and informative article about this almost extinct bird.

2Just go for a wander by the Euphrates! Its a nice little town and is definately good for an hour or two. Note that there are a large number of Dolmus in Birecik for some reason. The Dolmus to Halfeti leave from an area directly between the castle and river, at the northern most end of the massed ranks of minibuses.

6Just returned from my trip, will prepare my triplog in a few days..like sarikanarya says, there's no problem in the South East(ofcourse the tourist areas). I didnt go to Birecik or Halfeti, was too tired to change buses, but everything was stable in those areas(on sunday when the blasts occured). So go ahead with your plans.
