Manila scam/ Drugged by two sweet old ladiesI know that there will be people who make sly comments about my rookie mistake but after backpacking through 35 countries extensively for the past 10 years and living in Asia for 5 years, I figured I'd share my recent experience in Manila..
I was exploring Rixal park at sunset on April 15th, 2013 and ran into two 55-60 year old women crossing the road who offered to show me how to get to San Sebastian which is a famous Dutch cathedral made out of steel. We took a Jeepney (funky taxi) ten minutes into Old Manila. Afterwards, they invited me to join two other older ladies for beer to celebrate one of their birthdays so we went to a small Philipino restaurant and had a beer and sang a couple of karaoke songs and got carry out and went to their home nearby for the meal. I struggled through chicken liver before going to the bathroom. Upon my return, I had one sip of my second beer (which I planned to be my last) and I woke up in my guesthouse the next morning minus $200 US dollars & my credit cards (which had $2000 worth of purchases by 8pm). (I normally don't cruise the streets with this much but was just in an internet cafe booking a flight).
Truthfully, I have mixed feelings about this experience as they obviously could have taken everything in my possession or worse. However, they obviously liked me to a certain extent as they left my passport, health insurance card, some Filipino cash and my camera. They were definitely professionals as they deleted all the pictures that I had taken of them throughout dinner & at the church. The next day, I was so groggy that I barely was able to hail a taxi to the airport at 4pm to head to Korea.
Hopefully you won't run into any problems but know that situations like this do happen. Saying that, it won't stop me from heading back to the Philippines as 99% of the people I met there were super friendly and kind-hearted...

2They didn't leave your passport and camera and the Filipino cash because they liked you. They left that stuff to lessen the chance of you going to the police and to facilitate you leaving the country.
Out of curiosity, did you just happen to randomly ask these two ladies for directions to San Sebastian, or did they approach you with some pretext for starting up a conversation ? I suspect it was the latter.

3Still Rizal park. Has been going on there since over 20yrs. Except that they usually had a pretty girl with them as well.
Hmmm, guess she got older in those 20yrs too...
Try image recovery software, should be able to get you the images back. Not that it will get your cash back but at least you have a souvenir photo.

you may have been spotted with your card out in the internet cafe, giving them time to get the old-lady hit squad together.
as mentioned how did you manage to get back to the guesthouse. I'm surprised they did not steal your camera, however not surprised they let you keep your passport, and a bit of small local money. Victims of these kind of thefts often say that the bargirl or similar that drugs and mugs them left them a few hundred baht for taxi fare. It's not because they like you. It's because they think that you might think, that they like you and therefore will not report the matter to the police.

7Sounds like the modus operandi of the Ativan gang again. Luneta/Rizal have been their preferred hunting ground for more than 20 years. The PNP know it goes on but there is a lack of will to tackle the problem with any force.
There was a similar incident a few months ago,the victim had some photos of the "sweet old ladies" that they forgot to delete when they robbed him
Did you make a report to the police?

10same thing happened to me in Cuba 2011. At a party i was offered a drink of rum. came to 3 hours later sitting in my hotel resturant having dinner. Money and the girls i was partying with all gone. No memory of returning ti hotel or anything for three hours. I was out on my feet but kept videoing the party. I even videoed the girls stealing my money! I feel very bad for the girls. The Cuban cops were all over it and had them in custody the next day and they got 6 years! Never got the money back. When i learned the penalty they were destined to get i tired to change my story. 6 years for picking the pocket of a big, fat tourist is too much IMHO. I lost a few hundred euros. Inconvenient but no biggie.

12the wife is only suspect when it comes to any crime against foreigners in the Philippines, when the victim is one of the small minority of foreigners that happens to be married to one. When they are part of that small minority, the wife is very definitely near the top of the list of possible suspects.
