Thanks for your replies. I have found Salkantay Trek online and will be emailing them soon. Thank you :)
I kinda want to just rock up and look for an agency as I'm sure it will be cheaper, but I don't want to run the risk of missing the opportunity to trek MP for lack of spaces. MP now also has a limited amount of visitors per day and this is not much.... But thank you for your suggestion Keith!
Has anyone heard of the agency Kipachi Peru? they seem reasonable...
Thanks once again and if anyone can think of any other companies to recommend I will be very grateful.

17I'd agree that booking is Cusco is much cheaper and virtually risk free. Salkantay doesn't have limited spaces like the Inca Trail. Ask around and you will find a place if you search in Cusco even the day before your trek.
As for MP site they sell 2000 tickets per day. These only occasionally sell out in high season. Buying your ticket the same time as your trek shouldn't be a problem. Mount Huanapichu (on the MP site) sells out a week or two in advance in high season. Mount MP is a good alternative.

18My niece and I used Wayki tours on the Salkantay trek and then to Machu Pichu 2 years ago. Was an excellent experience.
We paid $500 and got value. Reliable pickup at airport even though we were hours late, 3 nights of private rooms in good hostels, several horses, a horse master, guide and chef, well organized travel to and from the trek, admission to machu pichu. excellent food and equipment on trail. if you can afford it, there is merit to going with a service that is not at the rock bottom level. there is a well understood dynamic of frugality effecting the horse master, cook etc the most. a good company will pay them well if you pay the company well.
obviously everyone has their own approach. we had the luxury of going with a first rate company that seemingly paid people well, did not cut corners and was very generous with local families along the route.
