Help needed planning trip to StromboliHi there
Myself and my boyfriend will be travelling Sicily for 2 weeks this July. We fly into Catania Airport and have booked the rental of a car for our 2 week stay.
Our plan is as follows: Stay the first night in Catania, drive on to Taormina area and use this as a base - stay 5 nights in self catering accomodation and work from there using car to see Etna, the beaches etc..
Then for the second week we are going to use somewhere around Noto (or maybe somewhere further inland) as a base and do the same.
While we are around Taormina, we want to take a trip to Stromboli - but we are wondering what the best way to do this is. We were wondering if a day trip from around the Taormina area (say, from Savoca) is possible? Ie: could we drive from there to Milazzo, ferry to Lipari and out to Stromboli all in one day - or would we need to be at Lipari the morning of our day trip?
Would we bring our rental car all the way to Lipari or would we leave it at Milazzo?
Would we be better to book 4 nights self catering and spend the 5th day travelling to Milazzo/Lipari so that we could start the 6th day in Lipari as opposed to making the trip from Taormina area on 6th day?
I hope this makes sense and that someone can help us to come to a decision

1If you start early!
You can drive to Milazzo, and leave your car there (at the port). Then take a ferry.
Do you want to see Lipari? Or only Stromboli? And do you want to see Stromboli at night as well? That is usually the best time to see the lava flows (in a boat..from the sea side of the volcano).
If you want to do that I'd go to Lipari, spend the afternoon there (or on Vulcano)...sleep there and do the Stromboli trip the next day (this is a private trip of course...not a ferry, but a boat that will take you to Stromboli and give you time there and an evening look at the lava...some of them go to Panarea first as well).
That means of course you would have to spend 2 nights on Lipari,as you get back there late evening.

What I am now thinking of doing is the following:
We are going to rent a self catering apartment just outside Taormina and take a day trip out to Stromboli.
We have enquired with the company SAT and they seem reasonable, and have a good reputation on TripAdvisor.
They can provide parking for our rental too.
At a 10am - midnight trip - it will be long, but from what I'm reading on reviews - worth it, with a night view of Stromboli.
This isn't set in stone as a plan yet, so if anyone would like to interject and propose a better idea I'm open to hear it
Thank you very much
