I think for foregnen tourists Yalta is the best place in Crimea. You know, Crimea is special resort for russian tourists, and all infrastructure made special for russians. In Yalta you can found a lot of place to travel for a few days, for example Botanical garden, Massandra, Livadia and Vorontsov palases, for visit Sevastopol you mast spend all the day (1.5 hour from Yalta by bus)

2Yalta for sure, check Yalta Intourist Hotel - great location in the big park overlooking Yalta bay, enourmous hotel but almost all floors now are refurbished + Not sure if you knew: GlobeSpots.com picked Ukraine's Crimea as #8 attraction to visit in 2013 "Ukraine provides a surreal combination of rock-till-you-drop coastal party towns to Crimean holiday resorts to cosmopolitan capitals to villages you'd swear you were still in the USSR," reads globespots.com. 4Hi - lived in Russia for a while, and went down to Crimea few times, primarily for climbing. Agreed, Yalta is a great base. We stayed at the Hotel Palas, ultisa Chekova 8, phone is (32-43-80) which is very nice, and great mtn views from balcony. It had been cheap, but looks like they've since upgraded:

Really liked Alupka Palace, nice trip from Yalta, but we just love Simeiz. They now have a real hotel there, and I think it would be a nice place to base out of as well: http://simeizhotel.com/ We always stayed at guest houses, but our landlady only spoke Russian.
Have great trip!
