1Interesting article and some use of statistics but for me one of the safest countries that I still feel at home in and generally safer than even back in Europe is Morocco...
it is a case of who you know and what you know and its all through Southern MOrocco that is home and safest to me - the people who do seem to be wanting instability by protesting and creating whatever unrest in MOrocco there has been, are said to be the same group of people, and are generally in the cities such as Casablanca and filtering down to Marrakech - the ones who are pretty much in positions to assist with the Islamic fundamentalists getting more power. So far the King does a good job at keeping them at bay and keeping balance in government and generally I dont feel unsafe anywhere in MOrocco. .
As for countries such as Australia and NZ that are also home to me that though they are extremely safe and peaceful countries there is a danger that budget travellers get an inaccurate idea that it is so safe that hitch hiking is fine when it is extremely risky in these countries - we have had so many people go missing over the years eventually to be discovered as murdered when out hitchhiking....
and then London which has also been home for the past 12 years we have had more bombs and deaths here in London than other countries in Africa, and certainly more than Morocco....and though the police are frequently advertising their ongoing activities to catch bomb making groups and plots most of us pretty much know in the back of our minds that anything can still happen - according to taxi drivers Ive talked to in the city the wealthy and those involved in business and politics still will not use public transport because of the risks

9doesnt really matter if its mainland or includes islands...its so subjective that its only opinion...I have American friends who wont go to Morocco because they are Jewish - and it cant possibly be any safer than at this moment to go so they have resigned themselves to the fact that they will never go - and if one knows Morocco the guys in the tourist industry I know respect and appreciate all who come to respectfully see Morocco but they particularly respect Israelis that want to see Morocco.
this sort of article and info from these departments dont convey what is the real situation

10I should have been more precise - so, for your benefit:
It appears from the map that the only safe country on the African mainland (thus excluding all islands) is Botswana.
And Spain :) Well, due to low resolution of the map, I can't see if Ceuta, Melilla and the peñón de Vélez de la Gomera (i.e.: the parts of Spain located on mainland Africa) are represented on the map but they should be.
But, seriously, it doesn't really matter. The map in the link is based on the travel advices provided by the Canadian government. Travel advices provided by other countries (e.g.: the USA, the UK, France...) could provide a different map... If we make a map based on the opinion of travelers to each country, we could get a different map too...
