3yep I found out about the route on that website, in 2009 they said the road was now sealed. The borders open at 8.30am and who knows about the vehicle, I'd say just a TIP like most other countries, will sort that out when I get to Mongolia, this is where I will be buying the motorbike anyway so hopefully that makes it easier

4Um, I think you missed my point. The Chinese won't let tourist foreigners drive in China, import their own vehicle (motorbikes included) without submitting advance itinerary, usually having an accompanying guide, getting a temporary license (Intl Drivers Permits not valid in China), and putting up a Customs bond. I 'm not seeing anything in your posts that reveals you know this already. However, if you already have a Chinese Residence Permit for Foreigners in your passport (working or long-term study), and have your regular Chinese drivers license, then the only issue shouldl be Customs and importation of the vehicle.

6Here's how it works: You put up a post, and other people respond as they see fit.
You also need to understand that about 90% of the people who have posted on this forum in the past about driving into China or through China on their truck, car, motorbike, whatever are completely oblivious to fact that it takes more than just rocking up to the border and showing their passport and registration papers. It would really sukk to have a nice route planned from UB through Mongolia, only to get turned back and have to backpedal from Chinese border to UB. If I've mistaken you for one of the 90% vs one of the 10%, my apologies.
