Ferry, Koh Kong to Sihanoukville and ,vice versa.. year 2013Any "recent" travellers done this sector by the ferry?
I did it 2011,Sihanoukville to Koh Kong.it was easy as!
Ferry left a couple k,s north out of Sihanoukville just past the main port, grabbed a Tuk Tuk type ride from serendippity beach to ferry.
Bought tickets to ride at the jetty, plus immigratition office visit..
Journey was clean, fast, and comfy with air con,and bus type seats.
Toilets were at rear.
Ferry dropped us close to Koh Kong, and we loaded into back of mini truck for shuttle across bridge to Thai/Cambodia Border crossing area.
After border formalities both sides, shuttle mini vans were waiting to take up to Trat.
As I said easy as!
My Bro said it was not operating August 2012 when he was there, and Im hitting there in a week or so,so be nice to know if its operating at the mo? Like April 2012.

1I'm surprised it was still running in 2011. Once they completed the last of the bridges for the new hi-way between KK and Sihanoukville no one wanted to take the ferry. As I recall the ferry was about $25 and didn't run if the weather was bad. The buses that take the hi-way are around $10 and go rain or shine.

2I too was unnder the impression that the ferry had ceased around the time the road was "opened"
This January I caught a "ferry" from Trapeang Roung to Koh Kong which was basically a small boat providing transport of people and goods to the villages in between. Very friendly crew and about 6 hours through the mangrove swamps all for $3

3I took that ferry in 2004 when it was sunny and everyone got baked on the roof. Then again in 2006 when a storm hit and my girlfriend was in tears waiting to die. But now that the road has been upgraded the ferry is history AFAIK, cancelled. I'm also surprised you got it in 2011. http://wikitravel.org/en/Sihanoukville#Get_in

4Yeah, I remember having the ferry cancelled for bad weather one day, then going the next day and wishing they had cancelled! The boats they used were built for rivers, and if the waters off-shore got the least bit rough it was like riding in a washing machine. I'm pretty sure they are gone forever.

5Re the OP-I'm pretty sure you are mistaken about taking the ferry in 2011,it was cancelled in 2009,when the new road from Koh Kong to Sre Ambel was opened.I lived in Koh Kong for 2 years and frequently used the ferry, but,as other posters have said,if the weather was even slightly rough,it was a terrible trip.It was uneconomic when the new road opened, and very shortly afterwards was cancelled,as there were no passengers. It definitely does not run any more, and there are no plans to revive it.

6I got the vid I took that day,ill check the date for that particular trip, one does lose track sometimes.
Its nothing to do with the $10 a litre Russian vodka availabe in Cam that one requires for medicinal purposes.
I got the the immigration guy in the office, the drag along the rough planks of the jetty to the boat, the old hags on the jetty in the throng begging as you embark, the narrow plank crossing from jetty to boat, and the boat interior, spacious on this trip.
I noticed a saffron cloaked monk taking a seat upfront,so thought, well thats a good sign,we will make it.
Ill check the vid date, hope I didnt stuff up.
