Kampala --> Arusha by bus?Hi
We are thinking about travelling from Kampala to Arusha by bus through Kenya.
On this forum we have seen you can buy a transit visa for Kenya. Is it possible to buy this transit visa on the bus at the border, or should we buy i it, at the Kenyan embassy in Kampala?
Can anyone recommend a good bus company for this trip?
Is it possible to go with a direct bus to Arusha or do we have to shift bus in Nairobi?
Thanks, we hope someone can help us.

1Sorry (1) no current info on bus/coach companies Kampala to Nairobi; (2) from Nairobi there are a number of companies - Riverside and Impala Hotel shuttles (22-25 seaters) and Kilimanjaro and Dar Express - full size coaches.
Sorry again - you will have to go via Nairobi - I think its about 8 - 10 hours from Kampala and depending upon weather and traffic its about 6 hours from Nairobi to Arusha. You should also factor in the two border crossings - at the Kenyan border you might have to insist on being issued with a transit visa - should be $20 US - make sure you have the correct amount as they will not give change. The Tanzanian visa will cost $50 US for a single entry visa. Again make sure you have the correct amount - also make sure you are using US dollar notes printed after 2005 and that the notes are in a good to very good condition. Good luck!

2Hippo, there is a company called Spider that runs buses between Kampala and Dar es Salaam via Arusha. I just met a European couple in Kampala who took this bus and they told me they did NOT require any kind of visa for transiting Kenya, as long as their ticket showed they were not terminating their journey there.
I cannot find their website but you can ask people in Kampala where the office is. I think Spider may have taken the route over from Scandinavian, which is now apparently out of business.
Mike is correct however that it costs US$20 for a 3-day transit visa should you opt to stop in Nairobi.
