Need Advice on a Short & Romantic Sri Lanka ItineraryMy bride to be and I will be spending 6 nights of our honeymoon in Sri Lanka (after the first 3 days in the Maldives) and I would like some advice on places to go.
I've been to Sri Lanka once before, but it was in late August and I realize the climates in parts of the country (specifically southern coast) aren't ideal for this time of year.
We'd love to go to Kandy and see some of the ancient sites, but also maybe visit a beach or the tea country.
I can't say that budget is of no concern, but I'd like to stay in very nice places.
The biggest priority, though, is getting the most of out of such a short stay without spending most of our time in the car.
Even if we have to confine it to 2 places different places to visit that would be fine, but I want them to be really memorable.
Any suggestions are welcomed.

Even though Sri Lanka is small country there are lot visit but as you mentioned you don't want to spend time in the car and interest of visiting Kandy,
I guess you could do with 2 night in kandy visiting elephant opherange and kadndy temple of tooth area, heading to Bentota via Ella wallawaya road, relax on beach hotel and enjoy even though there is some rain in August in south coast but it normally couple of hours in the evening,
if you want some sightseeing while in Bentota you could do Kande temple (tallest Buddha statue) boat trip on Bentota river or Madu Ganga, Turtle hatchery in Kosgoda, makeri ellas water fall, day tour to Hikkaduwa etc.
Of course if you wish to travel, you should do Culture triangle, Mirissa, Galle etc.

Within 6 days using a car you can get more places but as you require the nice and memorable places should be there.
Kandy is a nice place because in and around the city there are more places to see for ancient sites Sri Daladamaligawa (Temple of tooth relic), Gadaladeniya temple, Ambakke, Malwathu Magha Vihara etc for Animals Elephant Orphanage and Botanical Garden. And as well you can proceed to Nuwara Eliya or Ella. There are more scenic places in Ella and some resorts to stay there.
For a beach you can stay one day in Negombo before leave.

3Thanks for all the great input thus far!
I think I have narrowed things down a bit and wonder what you all might think is a better choice:
1. Go south toward Tangala and then Yala National Park, with a stop in Kandy on the way back.
2. Head to Wilpatu, then Kandy and see some of the Cultural Triangle?
Is the first option too ambitious for a short trip?
Is the weather in Tangala as rainy this time of year as a bit to the west?
And can the new Galle highway be used to shorten the trip to Tangala?

Yes the 1st option is better. You can use the Galle highway to reduce the time of traveling. Tangalle is more precious but weather unpredictable. In most of the time in August weather is OK and shine.
Stay 3 days in Tangalle and one day in Tissamaharamaya for Yala safari. And one day in Ella or Nuwara Eliya 1 day in Kandy.

5I would actually suggest 3 or 4 days in Kandy...there is the Temple of the Tooth, Peradeniya Botanical Gardens and the excellent Tea Museum (with a small tea estate attached). Also the lake itself is nice to stroll around at sunset.
Then you can visit Dambulla and Sigiriya as a day trip from Kandy, and the elephant orphanage (half a day).
Right in the centre the Queens Hotel is quite comfortable, or the Hotel Suisse which is abit more expensive.
I think you would find the beaches a bit disappointing after The Maldives (from most reports) although I have not been there myself.
Wilpattu NP is worth a visit because it has less tourists than Yala and some leopards which are being seen quite often. I spent 1 day there and saw a male leopard plus elephant, peacocks, a serpent eagle, crocodile and thousands of butterflies.
