Sail Spain to TangierI have been trying to find out if it is possible to sail from Spain to Tangier but all I seem to be finding is ferries, ferries and more ferries... is anyone out there aware of sail boats that head across the strait?? (FYI I am a 26yr old backpacker so not a huge budget)

3normal or usual travel is by ferry - unless you get a budget flight - but you have options of Algeciras or Tarifa - Algeciras ferries called slow and fast are the huge boats that take ages 1 and half to 2 and half hours despite being called a fast ferry but they are all around the same price around 20-26 euro.
These ferries now arrive at a new port half an hour or 45 mins south of Tangier.
If you take a bus for a few euros to Tarifa from Algeciras theres a fast catamaran ferry going every 2 hours that takes about 35-40 minutes and arrive at the old port of Tangier which is close to the city centre. (If you are coming back from Tangier that way the ticket includes the bus pickup from the ferry arrival and takes you to Algeciras directly)
you get about 10% discount when buying a return ticket.
Tarifa is an interesting seaside town with Moorish fortress and worth a visit while youre there.

4I have taken the ferry from Algeceiras to Tangier years ago and found it to be a most peaceful and relaxing trip. Yes, it took a couple of hours as I recall, but that is nothing. I enjoyed it and it was very safe. I even stopped off in Gibralter for an overnighter. For me it was a dream come true as I had only read about the rock of Gibralter in grammer school and there it was...finally within my reach. It is nothing spectacular in person, but if u love history as I do, it was still quite an adventure.
