Short RV itinerary from Los AngelesI know everyone is going to say three nights is not long enough for any kind of RV trip. But we have four days free in LA between destinations and our kids (4 & 9) really want to have an RV experience. Can anyone suggest an easy three night itinerary out of LA? Is it possible to get to Grand Canyon, spend a day sightseeing and return to LA in three nights? Any suggestions (and alternate itineraries) appreciated. Thanks.

1What time of year?
The Grand Canyon is really to far--8 hours each way, more or less.
My suggestion would be to drive north and stay in one of the state parks on the coast.
Montaña de Oro SP would be about 3 hours from LA, or you could go further north to Limekiln or Pfeffer Big Sur. One caveat--they won't have RV hookups and only Morro Bay has a dump station. There are privately-owned RV parks, which you can find here (along with reviews of some of the parks)
The plural of anecdote is not data.

3GC is doable, but it's a rather long drive (7~8 hours). If you don't mind the gas, and are willing to get on the road at 6am, go for it. You might even aim for the North Rim, allowing a half day in Zion en route. Plenty of free, undeveloped camp sites in the forest adjacent to the park.
If you want mountains, consider the 395 corridor, 4+ hours from LA. See the Bristlecones, Alabama Hills, Whitney Portal, Devil's Postpile, numerous pretty lakes, etc. Possibly roam as far north as Mono Lake.

5Considering you'll be on the Interstate most of the time...you can make good distances if you drive all day...
Closer in to LA... San Diego and its World famous Zoo may be of interest to kids...
Vegas is more family oriented these days...and the lights are spectacular...a "must see" at least once... but you'll be rushed to "do" Vegas and the Grand Canyon in 4 days...
Vegas is made for a 4 day vacation from LA...! You could drive to Zion via St. George Utah... as a long day trip... Death Valley is a day trip from Vegas or LA...very majestic scenery...with amazing long vistas...
The Grand Canyon is "doable" in your time frame...but it involves some very long drives on some rather boring roads...like the road from Boulder Dam to Winslow...then on to Flagstaff and then up to the Canyon...another 70 miles...! I love driving in the West...but those roads are really boring...

7mmm, 3 day's with RV out of LA in August. I may suggest head up the w. side of Sierra's towards Yosemite, camp.
2nd day drive thru Yosemite Hwy. 120 to the E. side Hwy 395, camp. Next day back to LA.
There are some first come non-reserve camps in Yosemite, I've always had luck at White Wolf.
On week day's finding a place to camp should be OK, find a place in early afternoon. Do your home work on camp spots. Weekends you better reserve.
Long drive but very beautiful and diverse country.
