Itinerary critique wantedHi!
I will spend 7 weeks in Indonesia, arriving on June 20 in Jakarta and leaving on August 8 from Denpasar. I have made a rough outline on where I want to go and I would like to know if it´s feasible within my time-span and also if you can recommend any operators/hostels on the places listed. For example I would like to dive both Nusa Penida and Komodo, so what is the best option, to start from Bali or go to Labuan Bajo? Is it worth going to both Tana Toraja and Lore Lindu concerning wild life and culture? Want to climb one volcano as well, which one is recommended regarding my route?
Any recommendations about route and stops are welcommed. I guess I need to book at least 2 domestic flights to and fro Sulawesi. I plan to do so with short notice to avoid stress. Is this possible? Are there any airlines which should be avoided?
My recent route plan is to go: Java-Ujon-Borobodur-Bali-Nusa Tenggara-Bali-Tana Toraja-Lore Lindu-Togeans-Bali
Btw I'm an advanced diver with 50 logged dives.
Main goals are to;
Ujon-hopefully see a lot of different hornbills
Bali/Nusa Tenggara-dive, dragons
Sulawesi-hopefully see some tarsiers, hornbills and Tongean Maquaqes, different indigenous tribes, culture.
Java max 2 weeks
Bali/Nusa Tenggara max 2 weeks
Sulawesi 3 weeks
Thank you for any help!

2That's definitely possible in that time frame - we did most of that same trip in 28 days.
How you get to Labuanbajo (aka "Bajo") depends on how you like to travel. I'd recommend flying at least one way. We went from Bali to Gili to Lombok.. then did the ferry to Sumba - bus across Sumba - and ferry to Flores. It's possible if you have some time to explore Sumba that if you spent 3 or 4 days crossing the island it might be enjoyable. You'll really have to do some searching to figure out where to go though. I suspect you'll spend some time in some dusty crossroad towns with not a lot to do, although maybe there's some redeeming features hiding there. If diving is your main goal, then I'd just fly from DPS to Bajo and back. It would be more interesting to fly from DPS to Ende, then backtrack to Bajo.
On Sulawesi you'll have to figure out your route. It may not be possible to go overland from Makassar, so flying into Manado may be better - Lion Air?

3You are unlikely to see almost any wildlife in Tanatoraja, that's a place for culture.
And Lore Lindu is not that great for wildlife (other than birds) either... Tangkoko and Bogani Nani Wartabone NP in North Sulawesi are the places to see wildlife on the island.
Ujung Kulon for hornbills?
Java has only 3 species of them.
You could see many more by crossing to Sumatra (10) or Borneo (9).
Of course going overland from Makassar to Tanatoraja and further north is possible.

4Thank you Vinn and Laszlo.
Laszlo, when it comes to hornbills I hope to see the great hornbill and the rhinocero hornbill. From what I've read so far on the net, Ujung Kulon seems to be quite a good place to see these species. Is that a misunderstanding?
On Sulawesi I would like to see the Sulawesi wrinkled hornbill.

5Rhinoceros hornbill can be seen in Ujung Kulon, but the great hornbill is only found in Indonesia on Sumatra (where both of these species occur).
Incidentally, there are more interesting hornbill species you could see in Sumatra - check the net for photos of white-crowned hornbill and helmeted hornbill, for example.

6So when it comes to flights, I guess I can already book a flight from Manado to Denpasar, since I decided to put Tangkoko on the itinerary and I fly home from Denpasar. But from Labuan to Makassar.. I don´t know exactly when I want to leave. From what I've read low price tickets can run out. If I buy a ticket now with an estimated date around mid July, is it possible to re-schedule the ticket if I notice that I want to leave earlier or later? If so, does this possibility come with a fee? Is it better to wait and by this ticket with short notice?
