Phnom Penh - worth more than one full day?Hi folks,
I am off to Phnom Penh later in the year and am struggling to decide on how long to spend here as I keep getting mixed reviews from people who have been there, and on online forums! Currently we have two nights (two evenings and one full day) but I may be able to add an extra night (and thus an extra day) by regigging the start of the Laos bit (by shortening a mekong cruise to 1 night). What would everyone recommend? I would want to do the killing fields and prisons etc, and also see the national museum and palace (but not the markets).

4I would say you will need atleast 2 nights... meaning 3 days. One for the killings fields and the Tuol Sleng museum - the S-21, its called. They are really depressing places to go to and quite heavy to take.
The royal palace, the natl museum and the smaller bits would need a day.
If you want to stroll through the river side and the russian markets etc prob have a happy pizza et al, throw in a day more.
Note: though it looks like everything is close, the mode of transport --just about anything is slow. It takes abt 7.5 hrs to travel about 323 kms from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. About 35-40 kms / hr is what vehicles go at. Keep that in mind when calculating travel times.

6To see the things on your list you need 2 days. It's a bit of a trek on a tuk tuk to the killing fields and the roads are very dusty so it's useful to have something to breathe though- I regretted not having a mask.
It's a mistake to skip the main market- not for shopping, but to see all the weird and wonderful sea creatures, fruit and vegetables you never knew existed! Unless you are a vegetarian- there are some live chickens there and other stuff that might be upsetting (I saw a live turtle- so sad!)

I would prefer to spend a day around a hotel pool in PP and do absolutely nothing than having to spend two days instead of one on that Mekong boat from Huay Xay-LP (if that's the one you talk about).
The scenery there gets monotonous on day one and a hotel pool in PP is a much nicer spot to chat with other tourists or read books.
Of course you have other options in PP than reading books and chatting at the hotel pool, but not really on the boat.
Go for that extra day in PP whatever you plan to do there.
