Tungurahua getting active

Just as a note to travellers passing through, the volcano Tungurahua has been increasingly active over the last couple weeks. It has been upgraded from Yellow to Orange (a scale of possible danger). The volcano overlooks the tourist town of Banos de Santa Agua. It would be best to check the newest information if heading to the area.

That volcano was the subject of many nightmares when I lived at the base of it for a month :b The refuge plan is a little obsolete; if that thing ever blows completely (as in a full-scale eruption) the river will not provide any buffer at all.

In Banos at the moment, only thing erupting here is the police arresting 25 or so youth last night at a tail gate rave getting out of hand. Tunga is still hiding behind cloud cover, no signs of activity in the last weekish.
