North Island suggestions wantedWe are going to the north island NZ 12/30 (after 2 weeks in Australia) for 6 nights, 5 full days. Our original plan was 2 nights Auckland, 1 in Bay of Islands, 1 somewhere on the way to Waitomo Caves, 1 Rotorua (go to a Hangi) and the last night near the Auckland airport. We now think this is probably too much time driving and not enough time enjoying places. We are now thinking of not going all the way up to the Bay of Islands since it's a long drive and it may be similar to the San Juans Islands in Washington state (my area) or Acadia Nat'l Park in Maine. One of the tour books recommended Hauraki Gulf, Corommandel and Lake Taupo as other nice places to see. We like mother nature, short hikes, animals and regular sightseeing. Any suggestions on how to modify our itinerary? Thank you for your assistance.

1As you will be in Rotorua anyway, base yourself there and visit Taupo which is only an hour away. Plenty of short hikes, geothermal wonders and things to see. You are in the wrong country for animals but if you keep quiet you will see some unusual bird life.
this is a very short trip and should only have two stops; 2 nights Auckland (suggest Mt Eden, Domain Museum, Skytower, maybe Devonport) and the rest in Rotorua which is four hours away.

3I'd definitely suggest the coromandel! Good hikes, beatiful beaches, not too far from auckland but lots to see. If you like hiking you can hike up the Pinnacles, near Thames, and if you go far north around Colville go up to New Chums beach on the northeast corner, really beautiful beach, and on the east coast you have cathedral cove and hot water beach to visit. You could easily fill 3 or 4 days here. Don't do too much driving, the driving is fairly slow along the coast in NZ so tends to take ages.

5I will avoid Auckland, it is nice but it is another city. I suggest you go to Waiheke island. Beautiful landscape with the beaches and the vineyards, if you go to Waiheke I suggest you book your hostel in advance by mail, Onetangui beach my favourite and there is a lovely backpackers hostel called KINA you could be here for a couple of days an the other 3 days at Coromandel etc.
Have a great trip!
